Madonna handwritten and signed limerick poem, composed by the superstar when she was only a junior in high school. Poem is penned in blue ballpoint to her friend Lori on the flyleaf, reading in full,
”There once was a
girl named Lori
and she was
pretty horny
then she came
to Mrs. Kitchen
and heard all
her bitchen……
well that’s a
different story!
Besides having a beautiful voice and disposition your [sic] a great lay! (Ha, Ha) Come back to Rock-chester and visit me. I’ll think of you and miss you (Honest) / Good luck / Madonna”.
1975 Rochester Adams High School yearbook features Madonna’s class photo on page 155, identified as ”Madonna Cicone”, and also a photo of her dancing on page 67. In the documentary film ”Truth or Dare”, Madonna reveals that she liked to write funny poems for her friends in high school, in this case Lori Snow, a senior who performed with Madonna in a school play. Yearbook measures 9.125” x 12.25”. Boards have become detached from text block, else very good condition with light wear and interior writing by friends. Madonna’s American Music Award For Favorite Female Pop/Rock Artist of 1987 — Fine
American Music Award presented to Madonna in 1987 at the height of her fame. Award recognizes the best selling solo artist in history as ”Favorite Pop/Rock Female Video Artist / ‘Madonna’ / 1987”. Award was presented to the superstar on the heels of her record ”True Blue,” the album carrying hits ”True Blue,” ”Live to Tell,” ”Papa Don’t Preach,” ”Open Your Heart” and ”La Isla Bonita.” Unlike the Grammys, which are determined by music industry insiders, the American Music Awards are based on record sales, airplay and video viewing. Pyramid shaped lucite award measures 15.5” in total height on a 5” x 5” square base. Fine. Sold for $25,428.
MTV Music ”Moonman” Award for Best Cinematography for Madonna’s Music Video ”Rain”
MTV ”Moonman” Video Music Award for Best Cinematography for Madonna’s 1993 music video ”Rain”, a beautiful and sleek video directed by Mark Romanek. Moonman was won by famed cinematographer Harris Savides who is the only cinematographer to have won three MTV Moonman awards for Best Cinematography. Savides also worked with scores of film directors during his celebrated career, including Martin Scorsese, David Fincher, Gus Van Sant, Ridley Scott and Sofia Coppola. Silver trophy is a sculpture-in-the-round, patterned after the channel’s iconic bumper. Award measures 11.5” in total height. Base diameter measures 5”. Weighs approximately 6 pounds, 4 ounces. Light wear, overall very good to near fine condition. Sold for $19,490.
Madonna MTV ”Moonman” Video Music Award — For Madonna’s ”Ray of Light” Music Video in 1998
1998 MTV ”Moonman” Video Music Award for Best Music Video Direction for Madonna’s ”Ray of Light”. Jonas Akerlund directed the video, which also won Video of the Year and six more VMA’s. Trophy by Manhattan Design is a sculpture-in-the-round, patterned after the channel’s iconic Moonman bumper that aired at the top of the hour. Moonman’s flag displays an MTV logo, perched upon the pole that twirls freely in his hand. Engraved plaque on the base reads, ”1997-1998 / Best Direction In A Video / Madonna / Ray of Light / Caresse Norman”. Norman served as manager and personal assistant to Madonna from 1997 until 2005 and was found dead at her home in 2010. Award measures 11.5” in total height. Base diameter measures 5”. Weighs 6 pounds, 1 ounce. In very good condition, with scratching to the top of the base from Moonman figure rotating, warping to flag pole, cracking at the center of the M under Moonman’s foot and bolt jutting out from the underside of the base causing statue to wobble. Madonna autograph letter signed, with envelope dated 17 April 1981, featuring an unknown, but prescient, Madonna fantasizing about one day playing at Madison Square Garden. The 7-time Grammy winning megastar who’s sold more than 250 million records writes to her brother 2 years prior to releasing her debut album. A 22 year-old at the time, an eager and ambitious Madonna grills Christopher for staying in Detroit and speaks of the possibilities in New York. She writes: ”…You see I have a manager right now. Her name is Camille Barbone, she’s very good and extremely helpful and at this time is supporting me while I try to get my music act together…I have moved 3 times since the last time we spoke (not unusual). I finally found a place on 8th and 30th across the street from Madison Square Garden (where someday I’ll play) 8 blocks from rehearsal studio and it’s the favorite street for assorted bums and winos to hangout on but their [sic] harmless they just add more life to my already chaotic lifestyle. I’ve been auditioning musicians for a couple of weeks, finally got a shit kicking band together and my guitar player went on a European tour with another band and so I’m auditioning again. It’s really frustrating cause I’m so anxious to start playing out and it would only be a matter of months before we went into the studio to record…I’ve been writing lots of good material lately (songs) and everyone tells me how wonderful they are but it takes so long to get record deals and negotiate contracts and find the right musicians that I feel like I could lose my marbles every other day. I’m a glutton for punishment! Do you like rap music? I’ve written some great rap tunes, they’re great to dance to…” Madonna then ends the letter by mentioning Easter and writing: ”…Think of me when you’re stuffing your face w/ Jelly Beans. Write soon or call 212-869-3885. So long kiddo, Madonna”. After releasing her second album, ”Like a Virgin” in 1984, she began her debut concert tour in Seattle on 10 April 1985. 2 months later, Madonna would live up to her word and finish her tour with 2 shows at Madison Square Garden, on 10 and 11 June 1985. 3pp. letter (on 3 separate sheets) is written in blue pen on white lined paper. Comes with original envelope addressed to Madonna’s brother, Christopher Ciccone. Envelope includes postal stamp, dated 17 April 1981, and return address under the name ”Aqua baby boogie bubba”. Pages measure 8.5” x 10”. Two folds on each page, minor ink smudge on each page, otherwise near fine condition. Incredible piece of music history from one of the best-selling artists of all-time. With an LOA from Madonna’s brother, Christopher Ciccone. Sold for $3,125.
Madonna’s 1972 Junior High Yearbook With Period Inscription by Her — “Dear Nancy, I hope you have fun at Adams and all the years to come. Madonna ’76′”
Scarce Madonna signed 1971-1972 yearbook from West Junior High School in Rochester Hills, Michigan. Featuring a black and white yearbook photo of Madonna as a 14 year-old appearing on page 7 with her real name, Madonna Ciccone, printed. Signed and inscribed in blue ink on the back cover by the queen of pop, “Dear Nancy, I hope you have fun at Adams [local MI high school] and all the years to come, Madonna ’76′”. Softcover book measures 8.5″ x 11″. Front cover is nearly detached at spine with separation to rear cover at spine. Only a handful of other inscriptions in book. Toning and staining to rear cover, else very good condition. Very rare with its 1970’s inscription. Sold for $2,682.
Shoes & Hat Worn by Madonna in ”Evita”
Madonna screen-worn hat and shoes from ”Evita.” The entertainer extraordinaire wore these in the 1996 biopic as Argentinian First Lady Eva Peron. Lot includes black velvet pump style shoes and asymmetrical black hat with white trim. Hat is by Egbers of New York. Interior band has ”MMM” written in ink. Near fine. Shoes are lined with Dr. Scholl’s cushions and show wear from use, else near fine. With COA from The Prop Store of London and provenance from Profiles in History. Sold for $2,167.
Madonna 1990 CLIO Award Statuette Presented to Pepsi for Controversial TV Ad
1990 CLIO Award “Honoring Advertising Excellence Worldwide” presented to Pepsi for the controversial “Make a Wish” television ad featuring Madonna. The ad was withdrawn following a public outcry over Madonna’s image in a video released about the same time. Inscription reads: “International Television/Cinema – 1990 / BEST: BEVERAGES NON-ALCOHOLIC / Pepsi – ‘Make A Wish/Madonna’ / BBDO. New York / PYTKA. Venice”. Brass-colored statuette measures 14.25″ x 7″. Very good condition. Sold for $1,946.
