Large Collection of Presidential Eyeglasses — Nine Pairs Belonging to Nine U.S. Presidents, Including Truman, Reagan, LBJ, Clinton, Bush 41 and Bush 43, Carter, Nixon & Ford

Impressive set of nine eyeglasses owned and worn by nine U.S. Presidents, with many accompanied by signed photos and letters from the Presidents. Set includes eyeglasses worn by nearly every post-WWII President, including: Harry S. Truman, Lyndon B. Johnson, Richard Nixon, Gerald Ford, Jimmy Carter, Ronald Reagan, George H.W. Bush, Bill Clinton and George W. Bush, all gifted to the Museum of Ophthalmology, and each framed in its own presentation shadowbox. 

Pair of Victory 6 U.S.A. bifocal eyeglasses owned and worn by 36th President Lyndon B. Johnson who, incidentally, was the first President to wear contact lenses. Green translucent plastic eyeglasses measure 5.25” wide from endpiece to endpiece, with maker’s name visible on both temples. Framed in a shadowbox with a photograph of LBJ wearing a similar or the exact pair of bifocal glasses, and with a typed letter signed by Char Diercks, Museum Registrar of the ”Lyndon Baines Johnson Library”. Glasses have two damaged areas near the bridge, which have been repaired. Shadowbox frame measures 29.5” x 16.5” x 2.875” deep, in near fine condition. Sold for $31,250.

Lyndon Johnson Leather Briefcase — Personally Owned by the President

Lyndon B. Johnson’s own tan cowhide briefcase with LBJ’s initials embossed in gold below the lock. One of the greatest political powerhouses of the 20th century, Johnson served in all of the highest-ranking elected offices: Congressman, Senator, Vice President and President. Briefcase measures 17.5″ x 14″. Key not included. In handsome, fine condition, with provenance from President Johnson’s daughter. Sold for $18,678.

Lyndon Johnson Attache Case — Scarce Item Personally Used by Johnson

Lyndon B. Johnson’s own leather attache case, with LBJ’s initials appearing in script below the handle. This case very likely housed documents pertaining to Johnson’s Great Society legislation, a series of landmark bills that reformed education, civil rights, healthcare and the environment. Attache case measures 20″ x 13″ x 5″. Key not included. Overall wear with tarnish to metal surfaces; very good to near fine. A rare piece used by the President who served during one of the most turbulent eras in the United States. With provenance from President Johnson’s daughter. Sold for $15,436.

President Lyndon B. Johnson’s Personally Owned & Worn Sport Coat — Gifted by Lady Bird to Her Ranch Foreman After Her Husband’s Passing

President Lyndon B. Johnson’s personally owned and worn sportcoat. ”Oviatt’s” brand coat has a personalized tag with typed lines reading ”Hon. Lyndon B. Johnson / Order: 6318 / Lot: 37087 / Size: 11-30-55”. Beige coat has small white polka dots speckled throughout. With an LOA from previous owner, detailing the history of the coat, which was gifted by Lady Bird to Cliff, her ranch foreman when LBJ passed away in 1973. Near fine condition overall. Sold for $11,858.

Tiffany & Co. World Clock From the Lyndon B. & Lady Bird Johnson Estate — Engraved ”The President, November 22, 1963 – January 20, 1969”

Exquisite world clock from the Lyndon B. Johnson family. Cylindrical timepiece by Tiffany & Co. features a prominent engraving to one side reading, ”The President / November 22, 1963 – January 20, 1969”. Brushed brass desktop clock features Arabic quarter-hour numerals surrounding a gilt and silver world planisphere. Map is divided into sectors with the names of twenty-four world cities and countries. 8-day Swiss movement is 15 jewels, and maker ”Tiffany & Co.” appears on the face. Measures 4” in diameter. Key for alarm and crystal is absent, else fine. With provenance from a charity auction benefiting the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center at the University of Texas, and an LOA from Lynda Johnson Robb. Sold for $10,541.

Lyndon Johnson Personally-Owned Gold Cigarette Case

Lyndon Johnson 14K gold cigarette case. The 3” x 5” case is monogrammed ”LBJ” and weighs 126 grams. Housed in a leather box, the case is accompanied by an LOA by the President’s daughter, Lynda Johnson Robb. Light rubbing and edge wear, else very good plus condition. Sold for $7,919.

Lyndon B. Johnson’s Personally Owned & Worn Stetson Hat — Quintessential LBJ

Lyndon B. Johnson personally owned Stetson hat, one of the pieces of clothing almost always worn by the President, at least back home in Texas. Gold-stamped upon the black leather sweatband of the hat reads, ”Made by Stetson Especially for Lyndon B. Johnson” and a picture of Texas appears on the grey satin liner tip with ”Johnson City / LBJ Ranch”. Beige satin acts as hatband, with a self-covered button. Luxurious hat is size 7 1/4”, befit for a President as one would expect. Accompanied by original buckled carrying case, with the Texas, LBJ Ranch insignia on top and Stetson label on side of box, with Johnson’s name printed, along with the hat size, type of hat (OpenRoad) and color, the tan shade known as Silbelly. Near fine condition. Sold for $5,000.

President Kennedy 1961 Birthday Program Signed by Bobby Kennedy, Vice President Lyndon B. Johnson & More

54pp. program details the evening and lists every guest in attendance. Cover reads, ”President Kennedy’s Birthday Dinner / May 27, 1961 / National Guard Armory / Washington D.C.” with a cake decorated with his initials. Signed to autographs page at close of program, ”Lyndon B. Johnson” in black marker, ”Robert Kennedy” in blue ink, and ”H.H. Humphrey” again in blue ink. Additionally signed by ”Sam Rayburn” in blue ink beneath his photo on p. 2. Measures 6.25” x 8.75” with minor toning. Very good. Sold for $1,344.

Sterling Silver Julep Cup Gifted & Inscribed by President Lyndon B. Johnson & Lady Bird in 1969

Lyndon B. Johnson inscribed sterling silver julep cup, inscribed and gifted as President. Traditional mint julep cup in the Johnson Presidential pattern is engraved across the front, ”With wishes for / a lifetime of happiness / Lady Bird and Lyndon Johnson / 1969”. Cup features a Sterling stamp, LBJ stamp and designer name, ”Mark J. Scearce / Shelbyville / Kentucky”. Measures 3.75” in height and 3” in diameter at the mouth. Weighs 5 ounces (141 grams). Some minor tarnishing and very superficial scratches. Near fine overall. Sold for $1,250.

Scarce Lyndon B. Johnson Autograph Letter Signed

President Lyndon B. Johnson autograph letter signed to Arthur J. Goldberg. Dated only “Sunday”, letter was likely composed sometime between 1965-67 when Goldberg served under LBJ as United Nations Ambassador. Written on an LBJ Ranch card, letter reads, “Dear Dorothy and Arthur – All you did in planning came out in one of the most beautiful and gay dinners we’ve attended – You were thoughtful – gracious & generous and we will always appreciate it and remember. Thanks again – Lyndon”. Single-page letter measures 5.25″ x 3.75″. Fine. With a handwritten and signed LOA from Arthur Goldberg’s son on Goldberg’s Supreme Court Justice stationery. Handwritten letters by Johnson as President are exceedingly rare. Sold for $1,100.

Pen Used by President Lyndon B. Johnson to Sign Bill H.R. 9599 Into Law Establishing the George Rogers Clark National Park — Includes Two Ink Refills and Two New Tips

Pen used by President Lyndon B. Johnson on 23 July 1966, signing bill H.R. 9599 into law. The bill authorized the Secretary of the Interior to make the George Rogers Clark memorial of Vincennes, IN into a National Park. Blue and silver pen features the presidential seal along with a facsimile of Johnson’s signature stamped in gold lettering to the middle, and arrives inside a gold Presidential box. Base of the box is removable, revealing a pouch which contains two refill ink cartridges and two new ink tips, allowing the nearly 50-year-old pen to be used as new. Box measures 6” x 2” x 1”. Pen measures 5.25”. Some toning to box top. Near fine. Sold for $938.
