Scarce and Distinguished Signed Portrait of the History-Altering Scientist, Louis Pasteur
Signed photo of Louis Pasteur, the pioneering French microbiologist and chemist who demonstrated the germ theory of disease and developed the first vaccine against rabies. Exceptional 4.25″ x 6.5″ formal seated cabinet portrait by A. Gershel of Paris, signed beside his image in ink, “L. Pasteur / Juin 1886.” Pasteur’s signature here came less than a year after he first showed the French Academy of Sciences promising results of his treatment against rabies in humans, and three months following his March 1886 presentation of a study of 350 inoculated with his rabies vaccine – of which there was only one unsuccessful treatment. In near fine condition, with a few trivial surface marks, a tiny wrinkle near left edge, and a slight bowing to the image. Sold for $2,912.

Louis Pasteur autograph letter signed, and written at lower portion of another letter addressed to him, dated 29 June 1889. Translated from French and reading in full, ”My dear Rene, I do not have Mr. Audin’s address. Have the kindness to add my heartfelt congratulations to yours. I salute through Mr. Audin a new success for microbial studies. No one can bring to them a more firm conviction. Hello and friendship.” Signed ”L. Pasteur”, one page letter measures 4.25” x 5” and is matted and framed with a portrait of Pasteur and a small plaque to an overall size of 15.5” x 13.5”. Some intersecting folds and repaired tears to left corner, else very good to near fine condition. Sold for $2,500.

We also sold these related items:
Unusually personal and autobiographical Sigmund Freud autograph letter signed, with content on Freud’s Jewish heritage and ancestry, the growth of psychoanalysis and the ”intense type of rejection” of it by psychiatrists, his marriage and children, and his professional writings and honorary degree; in essence, the whole of Freud’s life and career, as told in his own words. The content is especially important and unusual as Freud kept tight control over his autobiography, with this letter likely the most comprehensive detailing of it. He writes to fellow psychoanalyst Dr. Paul Federn, one of Freud’s earliest proteges, with Freud even dryly commenting in the beginning of his letter that his reluctance to answer Federn’s correspondence (by misplacing it) was ”most likely as a consequence of my resistance”. Dated 30 June 1913 upon his personal stationery from his home in Vienna. Sold for $25,000

Charles Darwin autograph letter signed with evolution related content written shortly after ”On the Origin of Species” was published. Dated 16 August (1860 or 1861), Darwin writes to his second cousin William Darwin Fox, who introduced Charles Darwin to entomology. Upon Down, Kent stationery, Darwin writes in part, ”…you had seen a dozen instances of white cats with blue eyes being deaf: how can you by an extraordinary chance remember the sex of any of them…C. Darwin”. Fox’s reply to Darwin, giving additional details on the white, blue-eyed, blind cats, is archived in the Darwin Correspondence Project. Single page letter measures 5” x 8”, with an engraving of Darwin measuring 5.5” x 8”. Uniform toning, mounting tape remnants and writing at top not in Darwin’s hand, overall very good condition. Sold for $15,000.

Robert Hooke Autograph Document Signed — Extraordinarily Rare Document by “England’s Leonardo” & Perhaps the Only Hooke Signed Document Regarding the Great Fire of London
Robert Hooke autograph document signed from 1670, arbitrating a property dispute after the “Late dreadfull fire” that destroyed most of London in 1666. Hooke was one of the three surveyors appointed after the Great Fire of London, and this document signed by him is perhaps the only one extant concerning the fire. His autograph concerning any subject is extraordinarily rare, especially considering the extent of his interests as a natural philosopher and polymath, whose 1666 book “Micrographia” was revolutionary in advancing microscopy and cell research. Called “England’s Leonardo”, Hooke was an early member of the Royal Society, responsible for curating its lab experiments, and corresponded at great length with Isaac Newton regarding gravity. In fact, some believe that Newton actually appropriated Hooke’s ideas about gravity as his own. Sold for $12,600.

Sigmund Freud autograph letter signed, composed in English, to his nephew Edward Bernays. Freud was close to his nephew, who is famous in his own right; Bernays is considered the “founder of the PR industry” and was an advocate of benevolent propaganda, using Freud’s psychological techniques to accomplish it. Datelined Vienna, 2 October 1920, Freud writes just as his psychoanalytic institutes were starting to take hold in Europe. In full, “Dear Edward / After my return from Holland I am glad to acknowledge your letter of Aug. 27th telling of the good sale of our translation. I had expected it would mean a piece of good business to you, but I realize from your letters and Felix’s account that it all goes to my profit, and I thank you heartily for this demonstration of kindness and helpfulness. / Now my appetite getting sharpened I propose to you the following arrangement which is likely to fall in with an offer of yours. I would promise to write, let us say: four popular papers a year for a certain review chosen by you and these articles, if successful, could be collected in the shape of a small book after some time. The title might be: Scraps of popular Psychoanalysis, or something alike. They are to be easy yet original. The first I intend to write down I might name: Don’t use [Greek letter psi]A in Polemics. As for the size it will depend on the subject, not too long generally. I will write in German but join an English version, which if not available itself, can guard the translator against serious mistakes. / I hope you will answer what you think of the project and how much it can bring deduction made for the cost of translation or correction etc. Also if the topic I mentioned as a sample seems a good one to you. / With kind love and thanks for your interest. / Your Uncle / freud.” Letter is beautifully presented in a double-sided frame that inserts into a larger frame. The front of the larger frame shows a sketch of Freud and opens to reveal the letter alongside its transcription. Visible portion of letter measures 5″ x 8″, framed to a size of 33.75″ x 18.75″ when displayed open. Fold and light creasing to letter, otherwise near fine. This Sigmund Freud Autograph Letter Signed sold for $11,000.

Charles Darwin autograph letter signed, dated 12 February 1879 shortly before his publication ”The Power of Movement in Plants”. Darwin writes fellow English naturalist and explorer Henry Walter Bates regarding a document to be sent to the Royal Society. Letter reads, ”Feb 12th 79 / Dear Bates / Enclosed is the certificate with 7 signatures, which I would think was ample, but I send it to you instead of direct to R.S. [Royal Society], as you might have to get stamps from Martin and friend Sir H.C. Rowlinson’s signature, whom I do not know. If I were in your place I would append to your title ‘Ex Pres [President] of Ent. [Entomological] Soc. [Society] Yr’; but you are the best judge of this. I think that you had better send the certificate, with note enclosed by a safe hand or [?]. Yours sincerely, Ch. Darwin”. Dated 17 October 1999, three page document is signed ”MHF Wilkins” at the top right of each page, and is accompanied by a photocopy of the original 3 March 1953 letter to Crick on ”Kings College” letterhead.
The last section of the manuscript refers particularly to the famed April 1953 ”Nature” magazine debuting DNA as a double helix structure that made Wilkins, Watson & Crick famous: ”…Gale was the editor of Nature and since he knew both Bragg & Randall there was no difficulty, so far as I was aware, to arrange for the Cambridge letter to be held back a little so that the two letters from King’s could be published alongside the Cambridge letter. Francis was a bit anxious that Pauling might suddenly produce the solution and ‘beat them to the post’. But, as I felt it, he was quite reasonable and I did not feel much tension…” Last page also includes two hand-drawn illustrations of the double helix and its structure. Three page manuscript on three sheets measures 8.25” x 11.625”. Staple punctures at top left and very light wear. Near fine condition. Sold for $3,750.

Maurice Wilkins Autograph Manuscript Signed Regarding DNA — “…I was edging away from DNA in cells towards molecular structure of DNA…Francis [Crick] believed genes were protein…”
Superb Maurice Wilkins autograph manuscript signed, dated 22 October 1999. Comprehensive manuscript on one page discusses a November 1948-9 letter Wilkins had written to Francis Crick as their relationship was blossoming and their preliminary ideas of DNA’s true structure were still being explored. Photocopy of the original letter is included which also bears his signature, “MHF Wilkins” and additionally, a small annotation in his hand: “Set of letters to Crick (showing my notes in red)”. Manuscript is written in black ink with a bold “MHF Wilkins” signed at the upper right corner. Reads in full: “Set of My Comment on the Letters to Crick / 22 Oct. 99 / Extra letter, probably the first I wrote to Crick. 1948-9 / In 1948 I was busy with microspectroscopy of living cells studying the changes in DNA in chromosome in dividing tissue culture cells; but I was also moving towards the structure of DNA itself because we were very lucky in hearing about [Oswald] Avery’s [who discovered that DNA is the material of which genes and chromosomes are made] work from a biochemist who had worked near Avery in New York & gave good reasons to believe that Avery really had shown DNA (by itself) really was the gene material. Also Gerald Oster had been a very useful U.S. visitor who brought me up to date on Stanley’s (California) work on crystals of TMV virus. So I was edging away from DNA in cells towards molecular structure of DNA. Like most British scientists, Francis believed genes were protein. We were very lucky to get inside information about Avery! Later when Jim Watson came to Cambridge he told them (all working on protein crystals) a great deal more about DNA work by the U.S. Phage Group. Thus Francis joined up with Jim. (who had been switched on by seeing our crystalline DNA pattern at my Naples talk). At the time of this letter my scientific work did not overlap much with Francis’s work which had been forced on him by the MRC who employed him in the Strangeways lab at Cambridge. However, the spirit at dinner with Frances & Odile reminded me of my very lively times in Berkeley during the war.” Signed “MHF Wilkins” at upper right. Manuscript measures 8.25″ x 11.5″ with staple holes and the number “1” circled in pencil at top left. Near fine condition. Sold for $2,431.

Publication information for the book reads, ”Printed for Henry Colburn, Public Library, Conduit-street, Hanover-square, 1815”. Lady Emma Hamilton, a contemporary of Jenner and Fermor, was a risque companion to many leading men of the period and muse to artist George Romney; the frontispiece of the book features her portrait by Romney.
