Louis Antoine Léon de Saint-Just (French pronunciation: [sɛ̃ʒyst]; 25 August 1767 – 9 Thermidor, Year II [28 July 1794]), was a French revolutionary, political philosopher, member and president of the French National Convention, a Jacobin club leader, and a major figure of the French Revolution. He was a close friend of Maximilien Robespierre and served as his most trusted ally during the period of Jacobin rule (1793–94) in the French First Republic. Saint-Just worked as a legislator and a military commissar, but he achieved a lasting reputation as the face of the Reign of Terror where he was named the Archangel of the Terror. He publicly delivered the condemnatory reports that emanated from Robespierre and the Committee of Public Safety and defended the use of violence against opponents of the government. He supervised the arrests of some of the most famous figures of the Revolution, many of whom ended up at the guillotine.

Napoleon Bonaparte’s Watch, Engraved and Gifted by Napoleon to His Protege, Baron Desgnettes — Documented as Originally Owned by Monaco’s Royal Family
Beautiful pocket watch given by Napoleon Bonaparte to his Baron Rene-Nicolas Dufriche Desgenettes. Desgenettes was responsible for leading the French Army’s department of medicine during the Napoleonic era, and was highly regarded by Napoleon, who gave him the title of Baron of the French empire in 1810. Silver and vermeil watch contains a pocket watch key along with a cock mechanism to the inside. Cover is engraved with an eagle holding a branch in its beak, surrounded by detailed engravings on the silver half hunter cover, with ”Jn Javel a Geneve” engraved to the cover’s inside. Features enamel dial with Arabic figures and second hand, and a gold mechanism cover with an engraving reading, ”Jn Javel a Geneve / L’Empereur au docteur baron des Genets 1812”. Measures 2.3” in diameter and weighs 108 grams. Chip to 8 hour and overall light scratching and tarnishing to the inside of the watch; very good condition. Documented as originally from the estate of the Monaco royal family. Napoleon Bonaparte watch auction will be in 2017. Sold for $22,435.
Rare First Edition of Sir Isaac Newton’s ”The Mathematical Principles of Natural Philosophy” — Two Volume Set From 1729
Rare Sir Isaac Newton first edition ”The Mathematical Principles of Natural Philosophy” in two volumes. London: Benjamin Motte, 1729. One of the most important works by the leading mind of the 18th century scientific revolution. Bound in contemporary tree calf, sympathetically rebacked, with gilt tooling to spines. Two octavo volumes measure 5.5” x 8.5” each. Volumes contain two folding letterpress tables and 47 folding engraved plates; the two frontispieces and pp. 385-393 and first 7pp. of index are replaced in facsimile, but hardly distinguishable from the original. The ”Laws of Moon’s Motion” usually found in Vol. II are here bound at end of Vol. I, and with errata for both volumes on verso of E4. Small stain to inner part of title in Vol. I, short tear to lower margin of G1, small section missing from lower margin of M3 and with lower corner cut away of A8 and C4 of ”Laws of Moon’s Motion” (no loss of text). Some marginal dampstaining and occasional soiling and spotting, overall in very good, clean condition with most edges untrimmed. Excellent Isaac Newton first edition. Sold for $22,500.
Benjamin Franklin Letter Signed to Scotsman Lord Kames
Very long and beautifully penned letter signed by Benjamin Franklin, written to Henry Home, Lord Kames, one of the principal figures of the Scottish Enlightenment, and mentor to both David Hume and Adam Smith. The American scientist and founding father writes to Kames from London on 21 October 1761 on a variety of topics, including effusive praise of Kames’ book, “Introduction to the Art of Thinking” and anticipation of Kames’ next book, “Elements of Criticism”. Franklin also mentions his own book “Art of Virtue”, which he never finished but seems inspired to complete after reading Kames’ work. Letter reads in part,
“My dear Lord, It is long since I have afforded myself the Pleasure of writing to you. As I grow in Years I find I grow more indolent, and more apt to procrastinate. I am indeed a bad Correspondent; but what avails Confession without Amendment!” Sold for $21,000.
Fantastic George Washington document signed as ”late Commander in Chief of the American Army” regarding his disgraced mentor, Jacob Vanbraham, a mercenary soldier who instructed Washington in the use of military weapons and then served under Washington in the French and Indian War before fighting against Washington and for the British during the Revolutionary War. In this document Washington acknowledges a payment he received from James Mercer to offset costs that Washington incurred lending money to Vanbraham; this money was used by Vanbraham to secure his claim to back pay and land due to him for fighting in the French and Indian War. The land was previously denied because Vanbraham notoriously mis-translated the word ”assassination” in describing the death of French officer Joseph Coulon de Villiers de Jumonville by Washington’s men at the Battle of Fort Necessity, which ignited the French and Indian War. Document is datelined Mount Vernon, 10 January 1786 and boldly signed Go. Washington, acknowledging the payment from Mercer to Washington of ”currency for the use of Jacob Vanbraham Esq late of Virginia formerly a Capt in the Virginia Regiment…for securing the said Vanbraham’s quota of lands…under the proclamation of the Honble. Robert Dinwiddie…” Verso of document contains letter by James Mercer to Vanbraham, dated 21 May 1786 requesting that Vanbraham repay him the amount owed plus interest. Document measures 7.25” x 8.75”, framed in dark green suede with a descriptive plaque and engraving of Washington to a total size of 42” x 24”. Light spotting and folds, with some tissue repair to verso over Mercer’s signature; though Washington’s signature is bold, it’s written over a fold which has an unrepaired split bisecting the signature and a small hole at fold. Overall very good condition. Previously sold at California Book Auctions on 18 November 1998, lot 5747, and referenced in the ”Writings of George Washington”, Volume 28. Sold for $12,500.

Two page document on a single sheet measures 7.25” x 9”. Ink stain at bottom of second page, and shallow folds, else near fine. Sold for $5,000.

Winston Churchill Signed “The Second World War” — Volume I: “The Gathering Storm”
Winston Churchill signs a copy of Volume I of his memoir “The Second World War.” Cassell & Co. Ltd: London: 1948. The volume, entitled “The Gathering Storm,” is signed upon the half title page: “Inscribed for M. Jacques Robert by Winston S. Churchill / 1948”. The theme of the book, covering the years from WWI to 1940, is “how the English-speaking peoples through their unwisdom, carelessness and good nature allowed the wicked to rearm.” Churchill was no longer Prime Minister when he wrote his six volume memoir, and controversy erupted over his use of official records to write his book. He was, however, granted special access by Prime Minister Clement Attlee because of Churchill’s exceptional status. The elegantly bound volume with 5.5″ x 8.25″ red boards and gold edges is housed in its original wooden slipcase. Overall in very good condition. A riveting signed account of WWII signed by England’s tireless guardian. Sold for $2,756.
Napoleon Bonaparte autograph note signed as general-in-chief of the French Army in Italy during the First Italian Campaign in the French Revolutionary Wars. Bonaparte here orders the arrest of a Genoa governor. Written in French, it translates: ”Send to General to carry out right away the mission suggested by citizen [Minister] Faipoult. / The general in chief / Bonaparte”. He writes the order upon a letter sent to him by Guillaume Charles Faipoult de Maisoncelle, French minister to Genoa. Also written in French, it’s datelined Genoa, 17th of Vendemiaire [October] in the 5th year of the French Republic [1796]. The minister reports: ”…Another new arrest of the 46 recruits who were sent here for Naples and who stopped in Novi, where Governor Oliveri gave them a certificate and declared them for the King of Naples…” Napoleon’s signed note appears on the upper margin of the first page of the minister’s 2pp. letter on 2 sheets. Measures 8.5” x 12”. Near fine. Matted in a gilt wooden frame to an overall size of 46.25” x 28.75”. Document is flanked by a printed translation and a print of Jacques-Louis David’s 1812 portrait called ”The Emperor Napoleon in His Study at the Tuileries.” Sliver of chipping to frame left and bottom edges, else near fine. Sold for $2,291.
Napoleon Bonaparte 1810 Document Signed — Regarding the Re-Opening of An Italian Church
Napoleon Bonaparte document signed, dated 28 November 1810. Written in French and signed by Ferdinando Marescalchi, Italian Secretary of State, who addresses Napoleon as ”the Emperor of the French, King of Italy, Protector of the Confederation of the Rhine”. Here, Marescalchi petitions on behalf of ”the People of Guastalla” for Napoleon to reopen the Church of Religious Servants in Guastalla, Italy, which had been closed during the French Revolution under an increased period of de-Christianization and religious suppression. Napoleon signs p.1 of document with an ”Accorde” written in Napoleon’s hand, or ”agreed” translated into English, as he concurred with Maresalchi’s request. Card-style document measures 8” x 12.25” and has text to front and verso of p. 1. Very minor toning, else near fine. Sold for $2,188.
Maximilien De Robespierre Document Signed
French revolutionary and leader of the Montagnards, Roberspierre signed document, as a member of the Committee of Public Safety. Paris, 3 June 1794, 2pp. folio. Document is an extract from the Register of Orders of the Committee, recording the Committee’s decision on the subject of the Department of Commission which oversaw appointments and salaries. Co-signed by Lazare Carnot, Barere Couthon, and Collot-D’Herbois, who were instrumental in bringing about Robespierre’s downfall just months later. Fine condition. Sold for $2,115.
