Lord Stanley of Preston Autograph Sold
Lord Stanley of Preston was born into English nobility and was the son of Prime Minister Edward Smith-Stanley. He served in the House of Commons of Canada and later as governor general of Canada. Stanley became an ice hockey fan after seeing a game at the 1889 Montreal Winter Carnival. He later donated an extravagant trophy to the Canadian Amateur Hockey Association to be awarded to the winner of the series. The Stanley cup has been presented by the National Hockey League since 1926, however the original trophy from Lord Stanley was retired in 1962.

Lord Stanley of Preston Signature — Originator of the Stanley Cup — Signed the Month He Donated the Trophy to Canada
Signature of Frederick Arthur Stanley, known as Lord Stanley of Preston, originator of hockey’s Stanley Cup. After his appointment by Queen Victoria in 1888 as Governor General of Canada, Stanley and his family became avid hockey fans. His two sons played for an Ottawa team and persuaded their father to donate a trophy. In March 1892, the date of this signature, Lord Stanley sent a message to the victorious Ottawa club reading in part: “…I am willing to give a cup which shall be held from year to year by the winning team.” Soon after this, he donated a silver punch bowl to serve as a trophy for the best amateur hockey club. Stanley signs on a 3.75″ x 2.25″ card: “Stanley of Preston / March/92”. Minor toning and glue residue, else very good. Sold for $1,556.

Queen Victoria 1855 Army Commission Signed During the Crimean War
Queen Victoria signs an army commission, dated 26 June 1855, during the Crimean War. The Queen appoints Colonel Edward John Fryer to the rank of ”…Ensign in our rifle brigade…” She signs in the upper left corner above an intact blindstamped seal. Countersigned by Secretary of War, The Lord Panmure. Also includes original blue ”one pound, ten shilling” stamp affixed to the left edge. Document measures 14” x 9.5”, with four vertical creases from folding and minor toning throughout. Near fine condition. Sold for $1,220.
Edward VIII and Wallis Simpson Signed ”The Windsor Years / The Life of Edward”
King Edward VIII signed first edition of ”The Windsor Years” by Lord Kinross. William Collins Sons & Co.: London: 1967. He inscribes the fly-leaf for a Pulitzer Prize winning journalist, ”To Joe and Eileen Kingsbury Smith / Edward / Duke of Windsor”. Beneath, Wallis Simpson signs ”Wallis / Duchess of Windsor”. Photos spanning the century fill this 303pp. profile of the reluctant King. Bound in red cloth boards with gilt design. Measures 10” x 13”. Tape marks to endpapers, else fine. Chipping and sunning to dustjacket spine, else near fine. Sold for $1,008.
