Of all the famous quotes uttered by Presidents throughout American history, the following is one that still screams scandal –“I did not have sexual relations with that woman, Miss Lewinsky,” said President Clinton in a nationally televised White House news conference in 1998 amidst the most salacious scandals ever to rock the White House — and which caused his infamous impeachment.
Lewinsky
Yet, as few remember, the Clinton – Lewinsky scandal was not isolated.
In fact, clothing seemed to mean more to the 22-year old White House intern than the public knew then, as she continued to send her personal clothing and various White House-related memorabilia to a former lover — and former high-school teacher, while serving as a Clinton intern.
Rewind five years to another lesser known salacious affair between Lewinsky and her Beverly Hills High School stage-production teacher, Andy Bleirer, who confessed to a five-year affair with Lewinsky, which started when she was 19.
We’re auctioning an incredible lot of 32 items Lewinsky sent to Bleir — with provenance from Kate Nason, formerly Mrs. Andy Bleiler.
Kenneth Starr examined the following items up for auction as potential evidence.
Lewinsky’s former lover then came out into the public eye explaining his concern over her:
“I couldn’t in good conscience just sit on this stuff and not tell authorities what I know,” said Bleiler.
The Bleilers’ lawyer at the time, Terry Giles, said that after moving to Washington, Lewinsky sent the couple letters and White House souvenirs.
“Some of this stuff is very strange,” he said. “Why did she send this stuff? Why was it so graphic?”
Take a look at the extraordinary lot of items from Monica Lewinsky — All of Which Was Used by Kenneth Starr in His Case for Impeachment Against Bill Clinton —
Including an incredible autograph letter signed by Monica: “…am I good at lying through my teeth or what…”
The lot also includes many incredible letters signed by Bill Clinton as President on White House stationery, each with oddly intimate nicknames the temptress imparts, signing her letters “”Monica”, “Monka” or curiously “Monstreeka” by Lewinsky.
Take this 20 February 1996, single-page letter to Bleile She adds an inscription to a Valentine’s Day card, “Dear Andy, Happy Valentine’s Day! I hope this day is filled with lots of love, hugs, n’ kisses!!! I miss you! xoxoxo Monica”. In another, she writes, “…I thought [enclosed ring] might fit a manly man like you (am I good at lying through my teeth or what…you a ‘manly man’ – ha-ha)!…Here’s a picture of me for…the shrine you guys are building for me in honor of my absence…”
She also sent 8 pieces of clothing Lewinsky gifted from her personal wardrobe to Kate Bleiler, the wife of her former lover, including a sheer black floor-length negligee:
Stranger things have happened in the White House, perhaps, but few have come to light and continue to strike intrigue and awe to the imagination like the Lewinsky-Clinton affair.
Though we don’t have her infamous blue dress, we sure do have an incredible collection of items garnered from the temptress at the height of her scandal.
