Levi Wells Prentice painting; a Western New York landscape by the American artist . Wax lined oil on canvas. Prentice was born in 1851 and raised on a Lewis County, New York farm. By the 1870’s, he was traveling solo across rural New York, painting vistas of the Adirondack Mountains and the surrounding region. Though he later became known for his still lifes, his pastoral landscapes demonstrate the same rustic charm and elegant detailing. Unsigned painting bears the artist’s unmistakable hallmarks, notably his evident concern with textual precision and his use of dark outlining. Relatively unknown during his life, Prentice gained wider recognition four decades after his 1935 death. With provenance from Doyle’s New York and Alexander Galleries. Painting measures 18″ x 12″ and is unframed. Fine condition. Sold for $5,500.
