Long blacklisted in Hollywood for both her skin color and politics, Lena Horne, by virtue of her sheer talent, slowly made inroads into the entertainment industry and is considered to have paved the way for several generations of woman entertainers of color.

In our January 2013 auction, we had the honor of auctioning Lena Horne’s Tony Award, a Special Award ”for Distinguished Achievement in Theatre”, was given to Horne in 1981 for her incredibly successful Broadway musical, ”Lena Horne: The Lady and Her Music” at the 35th Awards ceremony. which ran on Broadway from 1981-1982. Sold for $37,230.
She was set to retire in 1980 after a series of ups and downs in her career, but instead starred the next year in her famed one-woman show for which she won the Tony, “Lena Horne: The Lady and Her Music,” which ran for more than three hundred performances on Broadway. A total hit.

She sang a slew of her famous songs throughout the show, from jazz standards to music from films which she starred in. The show, then, becoming chronological, portraying her life as it evolved.
Horne even spoke candidly of the racism she endured throughout her life, which made it ground-breaking in its personal message.
Looking back on her life at the age of 80, the famed icon famously said: “My identity is very clear to me now. I am a black woman. I’m free. I no longer have to be a ‘credit.’ I don’t have to be a symbol to anybody; I don’t have to be a first to anybody. I don’t have to be an imitation of a white woman that Hollywood sort of hoped I’d become. I’m me, and I’m like nobody else.”
