Amasa Leland Stanford (March 9, 1824 – June 21, 1893) was an American industrialist and politician. He is the founder (with his wife, Jane) of Stanford University. Migrating to California from New York at the time of the Gold Rush, he became a successful merchant and wholesaler, and continued to build his business empire. He spent one two-year term as Governor of California after his election in 1861, and later eight years as a United States Senator. As president of Central Pacific Railroad, beginning in 1861, and later Southern Pacific, he had tremendous power in the region and a lasting impact on California. He is widely considered a robber baron.

Leland Stanford Stock Certificate Signed as President of the Bodie Bluff Consolidation Mining Company ”Leland Stanford.” 10.5” x 5.25”, black engraving with light yellow and pink underprint, Central vignette of 11 different mine names on the side of a mountain with mine entrance, cornucopia on left. Undated and unissued. Fine. Amasa Leland Stanford was an accomplished politician, entrepreneur, and railroad builder. He left a lasting legacy in California politics and a fine university that bears his name. Little is known of his mining ventures, though the company operated in Aurora, Mono County, California. Sold for $756.

Dr. Harvey Cushing Signed Biography of Dr. William Osler — Handsome Two Volume Set Signed by the Pioneering Neurosurgeon
Impressive set of two books signed by Dr. Harvey Cushing, the “Father of Modern Neurosurgery.” Cushing signs “The Life of Sir William Osler,” his Pulitzer Prize biography about his mentor, and inscribes it to Dr. Fred Ellsworth Clow, who pioneered the first studies on anorexia in the 1930’s. Signed on the front free endpaper, “Inscribed for Dr. Fred Ellsworth Clow with the regards of Harvey Cushing / New Haven Oct. 25 1938”. Oxford University Press: Oxford: 1925, third impression. Clow’s bookplates to pastedowns. Overall very good. Sold for $1,074.
Harvey Cushing Signed Neurosurgery Book, “From a Surgeon’s Journal” — Uninscribed
Harvey Cushing, considered the father of modern neurosurgery, signed copy of “From a Surgeon’s Journal”. Uninscribed signature appears on tipped-in blank sheet following copyright page, as is typical with these signed first editions. Published by Little, Brown and Co.: Boston: 1936 first edition details Cushing’s experiences from 1915-1918. At 534 pages, hardcover includes 34 pictures, maps and illustration engravings. Measures 9.25″ x 6.5″. Very mild discoloration to covers, first page has been removed and light toning to signature page. Very good plus condition. Sold for $732.
