Knute Rockne Autograph Sold

Knute Rockne was a college football player for Notre Dame and many consider him to be the best college football coach. He and fellow teammate Gus Dorais are credited for popularizing the forward pass. Although it was first used and legalized in 1906, Dorais and Knute practiced it during the summer of 1913 while working as lifeguards. They first used the forward pass during a November 1913 game against West Point with remarkable results. Notre Dame continued with their victories that season. The forward pass is considered to have transformed the game of football and their wins in 1913 helped establish Notre Dame as a strong football team nationally.

Your work at end this spring showed promise but, of course, terrible room for improvement. There will be six veteran ends back this year who are seniors and it may herefore, appear to you that your chances for making the team this year are not so good. However, the question I want to ask you young fellow is this: ‘Who is going to play end the year following — and how good will they be?’ That will depend entirely on you — how hard you work — and how good you get by that time. Besides, there is always a possibility that one of the young ones can work one of the old ones out, as you know nothing counts but performance on the field. Trusting you are having a pleasant summer and with kindest regards, I am / Yours sincerely, K. K. Rockne / Director of Athletics.” Letter measures 8.5″ X 11″.
