Sun Yat-sen Signed First Edition of His Book ”The International Development of China
”Scarce signed copy of Sun Yat-sen’s book, ”The International Development of China”, boldly inscribed in fountain pen by the Chinese leader on the front free endpaper, ”Mr. H.S. Quigley / Sun Yat-sen”. New York and London: G.P. Putnam’s Sons, 1922 first English edition. Book is inscribed to Harold Scott Quigley, a scholar of Chinese studies who acquired the autograph in Shanghai in 1923, possibly during the Sun-Joffe Agreement, which was held in Shanghai in January 1923. In original publisher’s binding, book contains all maps, including the folding map housed in the rear pastedown pocket. Book measures 5.675” x 8.25” and runs 265pp. Text block has pulled away from backstrip at page 49. Portrait and biography of Sun, taken from jacket, have been affixed to front pastedown and free endpaper, underneath signature. Some pencil erasure at bottom of signature page. Chip to top of backstrip, and paper clip to rear endpaper. Overall in very good condition. An important book authored by Sun Yat-sen, the founding father of China, and scarce as signed by him. Sold for $17,690.

Scarce Hirohito and Empress Nagako 8” x 10” Portrait Photos Signed
Matching pair of vintage photos signed of Hirohito and Empress Nagako. Both three-quarter length portrait photos are signed in Japanese in black felt tip by the rulers respectively. Hirohito is notorious for serving as Emperor through WWII and escaping prosecution for war crimes. This set was gifted to Eigil Nygaard, the Norwegian ambassador to Japan. Each black and white photo measures 8” x 10”, displayed side by side in a hinged frame. Near fine. Sold for $10,625.

Rare photograph signed by Hirohito, Emperor Showa and his wife Empress Kojun. Hirohito was Japan’s longest ruling emperor and its most influential, ruling over Japan during and after WWII. Between his ascension in 1926 and his death in 1989, Hirohito grew Japan to the second largest economy in the world. Signed by the Emperor and his wife Empress Kojun in elegant Japanese characters, photograph features the Emperor wearing the Collar of the Supreme Order of the Chrysanthemums. Lot also includes an elaborate menu from the Royal couple’s trip to the United States, which took place from 30 September through 14 October of 1975. 8pp. document contains menus from each leg of the Royal Family’s trip to the cities Washington, D.C., New York, Chicago, Los Angeles, San Diego, San Francisco and Honolulu. Photograph measures 6.25” x 9”. Menu measures 11.25” x 14.5”. Near fine condition overall. Sold for $6,563.

Ho Chi Minh autograph letter signed, dated 2 May 1946 as President of the Democratic Republic of Vietnam. Ho writes to Army Captain John I. Farris, stationed in Hanoi for nine months as the most senior American military member of a team sent by the U.S. to investigate American planes shot down in the area. In this letter, Ho responds to a letter by Farris regarding an incident at the Yen-Lap prison camp, where Vietnamese soldiers shot at American military. On official stationery, English letter reads in full,
”To Capt. Farris / American Mission / Dear Sir, I have received your letter dated April 29, 1946. An investigation is being ordered accordingly. And severe disciplinary action will be taken against those guards at Yen-Lap, who have been responsible of [sic] the incident. / I thank you very much for your friendly advice. / Best greetings / Yours truly / Ho Chi Minh / May 2d, 1946”. Single page letter penned in blue fountain pen measures 5.5” x 8.25”. Folds, light wear and creasing, and staple impression at upper left. With bold handwriting, overall in very good condition. Consigned by the family of Captain Farris. Sold for $5,539.

Ho Chi Minh Signed Photo — Also Signed by Raul Castro From 1966
Photo signed by Ho Chi Minh during the Vietnam War, and additionally signed by Raul Castro who dates his signature to 1966. The two men appear alongside each other at a conference for Vietnam and Cuban solidarity, with the flags of two communist countries in the background. Ho Chi Minh signs both in English and Vietnamese. Information regarding the event is written upon the verso. Glossy photo measures 6.75” x 4.75”. Irregularly trimmed top edge and some buckling, otherwise near fine. Sold for $5,355.

Very Scarce Hirohito World War II Dated Letter Signed
Excessively rare war-dated letter signed by the Emperor of Japan, Hirohito, and countersigned by Prince Fumimaro Konoye. From Tokyo dated 1939, Hirohito writes a letter of diplomacy to Peruvian President Oscar Benavides. Letter reads: “Hirohito, by the Grace of God, Emperor of Japan, and seated on the throne occupied by the same dynasty eternally, to his Excellency General Oscar Raymundo Benavides Larrea, President of the Republic of Peru. Great and good friend, it is with the joy of life that we have received the letter from your Excellency addressing your country’s economic and cultural visit to Japan, and we are happy knowing that you also wish to foster strong commercial ties between our countries. We are certain that the productive meeting of your Peruvian mission, presided by the eminent General Don Cesar de la Fuente, ex-minister of Foreign Affairs, and the people of our country will bear fruit in both economic and cultural terms, all of which will contribute to stronger and closer ties which will bind our friendship uniting Japan and Peru happily. We take this occasion to sincerely wish for your Excellency personal luck, and with that the prosperity of your nation. Your Good Friend, Hirohito”. Document is countersigned by Prince Fumimaro Konoe, Minister of Foreign Affairs at the Imperial Palace in Tokyo. Gold-trimmed two-page folio letter in Japanese kanji is accompanied by an original printed letter on official Imperial Japanese paper translating the document into French. Letter is moderately toned, with beautiful trim and calligraphy and a superb signature. Evidence of mounting on borders of verso, overall very good condition. Sold for $4,823.

Bao Dai signed photo, the last ruling Emperor of Vietnam, and the final Emperor of the Nguyen dynasty. After serving as Emperor of Annam – a large territory within Vietnam, for nearly twenty years, Bao Dai served as Vietnam’s last Emperor from March-August 1945, during which time he named the country Vietnam in order to unify it. He would go on to serve as Chief of State for Vietnam until 1955, during which time he signed this photo. Matte photo measuring 3.375” x 5.5” bears embossed Vietnamese stamp on verso. Mild wear and creasing, overall very good to near fine condition. Accompanied by the original 1952 letter and envelope from Dai’s office. Sold for $3,125.
