Rare autograph letter signed by General Joshua Chamberlain, dated 30 November (1864), with Chamberlain writing of his wounds from the Battle of Petersburg. Chamberlain writes a partial letter to Maine’s Secretary of State, E.B. French, in part: ”…direct, as I think you wished me to put it into your hands. I have kept it a few days in order to see the officers of the Regt. I have been assigned to the 1st Brigade 1st Division 5th Corps for the present. I feel the effect of my wounds very much but think I can stand it. They did not seem very sorry to see me back. With kind remembrances to Mrs. French, very truly yours, J.L. Chamberlain / Nov. 30th. Headquarters / 1st Divisions / 5th Army Corps”. Letter on one page measures 5” x 7.75”, mounted to a piece of cardboard paper measuring 8” x 10.5”. Foxing and toning throughout, overall very good. Sold for $1,250.
Civil War General & Gettyburg Hero Joshua Chamberlain Signed Check
Check signed ”Joshua L. Chamberlain” by the decorated Civil War general. Dated 4 July 1898, Sixth National Bank check is made out in Chamberlain’s hand to ”W O Peterson” in the amount of $11.40. Measures 6.25” x 3”. Mounted and matted below a photo of Chamberlain in uniform to an overall size of 13.5” x 20”. Standard bank cancellations. Near fine. Sold for $938.
Joshua Chamberlain Check Signed — 1875
Joshua Chamberlain check signed. The Gettysburg hero signs ”Joshua L. Chamberlain” to a First National Bank of Brunswick check, dated 12 April 1875 and made payable to one ”Wm B. Knight” in the amount of $14.00. Toning, else fine. 7.75” x 3” check is attractively mounted and matted with a photo of Chamberlain to an overall size of 13” x 18.5”. Near fine. Sold for $938.
Joshua Chamberlain document signed, ”J L Chamberlain” as president of Bowdoin College in Brunswick, Maine. Dated 5 April 1876, partially-printed document is a bill for one of the pupils, one Frank R. Kimball of Salem, Massachusetts. Itemized bill lists costs of tuition and room and board, totaling $51.26. Chamberlain worked as a professor at the college before volunteering in the Union army, where he distinguished himself at Gettysburg before returning to Bowdoin. Single-page document measures 8” x 10”. Creasing, pinholes to left edge from binding and light adhesive to verso, else near fine. Sold for $500.
