John Augustus Sutter (February 23, 1803 – June 18, 1880), born Johann August Sutter, was a German-born Swiss immigrant of Mexican and American citizenship, known for establishing Sutter’s Fort in the area that would eventually become Sacramento, California, the state’s capital. Although he became famous following the discovery of gold by his employee James W. Marshall and the mill-making team at Sutter’s Mill, Sutter saw his own business ventures fail during the California Gold Rush. Those of his elder son, John Augustus Sutter Jr., were more successful.

Abraham Lincoln Signed CDV as President — John Hay Certifies Signature as Authentic on Verso
Exceptionally rare Abraham Lincoln signed carte-de-visite photograph, taken by Alexander Gardner in 1861 and signed as President. Signed ”A. Lincoln” below the seated portrait of Lincoln. John Hay, Lincoln’s private secretary, authenticates the signature upon the verso by writing, ”I certify that the President’s signature is genuine / John Hay”. With ”Brady’s National Portrait Gallery” backstamp. Measures 2.5” x 3.75”. Very good with some foxing and wear, but with a strong signature by Lincoln. With provenance from Profiles in History and with a COA from Charles Hamilton. Sold for $49,913.

Enormous 20.75″ x 17.5″ Albumen Photo by Carleton Watkins of 1860’s Yosemite Valley — Signed by Watkins, the Renowned Early Western Photographer
Rare Carleton Watkins 1860’s “mammoth plate” albumen photograph of a Yosemite Valley hunting party. One of the preeminent early Western photographers, Watkins’ photos are coveted not only for their natural beauty, but for the opportunity to peek through the window to see pre-settled America. Having come to California during the Gold Rush, Watkins soon became passionate for landscape photography and scenes of mining activity. His focus upon Yosemite Valley at the time of this photograph influenced the U.S. Congress to establish it as a National Park in 1864. Stunning, large photo is housed in a simple period frame measuring 32.5″ x 29″. Photo measures 20.75″ x 17.5″, with “C.E. Watkins” signature at lower right. Minor dark burn mark in central sky area, else near fine. Sold for $2,420.
Oil mogul John D. Rockefeller signed stock certificate for Standard Oil Trust. Stock is signed ”J.D. Rockefeller” as company President. Certificate for 100 shares in the United States’ first giant business trust is dated 26 December 1884, made out to Eliza J. Sweetser with serial number A468. Countersigned by Henry Flagler as Secretary, and the Treasurer. Stock measures 16” x 7.75”. Glue remnants where stub has been attached to stock, overall in very good to near fine condition. Sold for $2,330.
James W. Marshall Signature
James W. Marshall signs a slip: “Ja’s. W. Marshall”. Beneath his signature is printed: “The Discoverer of Gold in California”. Marshall earned this distinction in 1848 when he found gold in the California River during his employ at the Old Sutter Mill, an etching of which is printed to the upper left. Measures 5.25″ x 2.75″. Toning and light staining with creasing to lower left, else near fine. Sold for $2,197.
John D. Rockefeller Standard Oil Trust Stock Certificate Signed as President of the Company — 1889
Oil mogul John D. Rockefeller Standard Oil Trust stock certificate signed ”J.D. Rockefeller” as company President. Certificate for 10 shares in the United States’ first giant business trust is dated 22 May 1899 and made out to H.M. Flager, the company secretary and one of the six original Standard Oil co-founders. Countersigned by Flagler and also by the treasurer. With serial number 5777 and a cancellation stamp dated 20 June 1890. Measures 15.5” x 7.75”. Near fine. Sold for $1,875.
Very early Pontchartrain Railroad minutes from 17 December 1850 through 15 December 1856, accompanied by 7pp. Pensacola Railroad incorporation document. In 1830, this Louisiana railroad was only the second ever railroad constructed in the U.S. and the first west of the Allegheny Mountains; many Americans knew its steam locomotive by its popular nickname, the ”Smoky Mary.” Book of minutes comprises over 200 pages of handwritten notes from the formal meetings of the Pontchartrain Railroad’s administrators in its infancy. Log book contains all the most important information related to the major decisions made for the Pontchartrain’s earliest development, including plans for the acquisition of new land. On the upper margin of nearly every handwritten page is, ”Meeting of the Board of Directors of the Pontchartrain Railroad Company”, written with the date and usually also ”New Orleans, LA”. 208 pages are bound in dark paper boards, measuring 10.5” x 15.75”. Toning and wear to exterior, with cocking and chipping to spine, else near fine given age. An important and singular piece of railroad history. Sold for $1,563.
