East of Eden is a novel by American author and Nobel Prize winner John Steinbeck. Published in September 1952, the work is regarded by many to be Steinbeck’s most ambitious novel and by Steinbeck himself to be his magnum opus. Steinbeck stated about East of Eden: “It has everything in it I have been able to learn about my craft or profession in all these years,” and later said: “I think everything else I have written has been, in a sense, practice for this.” The novel was originally addressed to Steinbeck’s young sons, Thom and John (then 61⁄2 and 41⁄2 years old, respectively). Steinbeck wanted to describe the Salinas Valley for them in detail: the sights, sounds, smells and colors.

Signed limited edition copy of “East of Eden” by John Steinbeck. Viking Press: 1952. One of just 1,500 first edition copies signed by the author, 750 of which were intended for private distribution. Signed, “John Steinbeck” in blue ink to limitation page. First issue volume with all points present including “bite” for “bight” on p. 281, line 38. Sans dustjacket and publisher’s slipcase. Minor wear to green cloth boards. 1.5″ separation to rear hinge though binding remains tight. Overall, very good condition. Sold for $1,800.

One of only 1,537 copies printed, this volume still retains the very rare unclipped first edition dust jacket, showing the original price of $2.50. First edition has matching dates of 1929 on the title and copyright pages, and with “First Published, August, 1929″ at the top of the copyright page. Measures 5.5″ x 8”. Very handsome copy is bound in yellow-gold cloth stamped in black, with top edge blue. Very light soiling and wear to book, otherwise near fine. Dust jacket is restored for display by noted conservator John Pofelski, otherweise near fine condition. Sold for $8,743.
Silver punch bowl from the wedding of John Steinbeck. Gorgeous, gleaming silver plated bowl is engraved, ”John & Elaine”, with the date of their wedding beneath, ”December 28, 1950”. The opposite side is engraved with the wedding date and names of John Steinbeck’s son and daughter in law, ”Thomas & Gail / June 10, 1995”. Bowl measures 10” in diameter across the mouth, upon a stepped foot measuring 6.25” in its diameter. Measures 6.5” in height. Bears the maker’s mark of Prill Silver Company. Accompanied by a Hagerty Silversmith Cloth zippered bag. Some scratching near the inscription to the younger Steinbeck and inside the bowl, else near fine. While Steinbeck books are found in collecting, seldom are his personal effects or apparel available. With an LOA from his son Thomas Steinbeck. Sold for $3,125.
John Steinbeck Signed Copy of The Grapes of Wrath
John Ernst Steinbeck Jr. (/ˈstaɪnbɛk/; February 27, 1902 – December 20, 1968) was an American author and the 1962 Nobel Prize in Literature winner “for his realistic and imaginative writings, combining as they do sympathetic humour and keen social perception.” He has been called “a giant of American letters.” During his writing career, he authored 33 books, with one book coauthored alongside Edward Ricketts, including 16 novels, six non-fiction books, and two collections of short stories. He is widely known for the comic novels Tortilla Flat (1935) and Cannery Row (1945), the multi-generation epic East of Eden (1952), and the novellas The Red Pony (1933) and Of Mice and Men (1937). The Pulitzer Prize-winning The Grapes of Wrath (1939) is considered Steinbeck’s masterpiece and part of the American literary canon.[6] In the first 75 years after it was published, it sold 14 million copies.
John Steinbeck signed “The Grapes of Wrath”, inscribed to Emilio Fernandez. Garden City, NY: Sun Dial Press, 1941. Steinbeck inscribes this copy to Emilio Fernandez, the famed Mexican director and actor who directed “The Pearl”, the cinematic adaptation of Hemingway’s novella, with the screenplay written by both men. Fernandez is even said to be the model for the famous Oscar statuette. Steinbeck writes upon the front free endpaper, “For Emilio (Kekupao) Fernandez / in hope that / we will have more grapes than wrath / John Steinbeck”. Chipped and toned dust jacket is in very good condition. Book itself is near fine. With University Archives COA. Sold for $2,100.

Klemaszewski from John Steinbeck 11/20/63” on the half-title page. A fine example of Steinbeck’s epic American novel, which largely contributed to his winning the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1962. 5” x 7.75” book runs 619pp. Partial separation of front hinge, limited soiling to boards and light wear on both joints. Very good condition. Sold for $1,562.

John Steinbeck signed first edition, first printing of ”The Short Novels of John Steinbeck,” Viking: New York: 1953. The Nobel Prize-winning author inscribes the front free endpaper: ”For Hank Pearson / with best wishes / John Steinbeck / New York 1953”. This first edition in its original dustjacket is a compilation of six of his moving stories: ”Tortilla Flat,” ”The Red Pony,” ”Of Mice and Men,” ”The Moon is Down,” ”Cannery Row” and ”The Pearl.” Bound in brick red cloth boards with black lettering. Top edge yellow. Original grey and orange unclipped dustjacket is near fine. Book has small areas of discoloration on signature page and rear free endpaper, else fine.

John Steinbeck autograph letter signed on how to make the perfect cup of coffee: with an egg. Steinbeck’s famous egg/coffee recipe (told in “Travels With Charley”) is outlined here in detail on this 5 September 1962 letter to a Mr. Fraser: “…As far as I know the best way to make coffee is the oldest. Measure your water (cold water) in coffee cup, not measuring cup into a coffee pot, or with a tin can. Add a heaping tablespoon of good coffee for each cup and one for the pot. Put the egg shells…in the pot. Bring to a rolling boil as just before it bails over. Set aside and add a couple of spoons of cold water or a part of an ice cube. This will settle the grounds. Drink as is and don’t reheat. If you want the coffee really to shine mix in the dry grounds the white of one egg before they are put in the cold water. This will give a wine like clarity but has no effect on flavor. Sometimes I add double the amount of coffee for pure glory…Yours / John Steinbeck”. Visible portion of letter measures 7.25″ x 9.5″, written on yellow lined paper which he used to write his manuscripts. Matted to a size of 15.5″ x 12.75″. Folds and light creasing, otherwise near fine condition. Perfect for framing in the kitchen. Sold for $1,472.
Rare First Edition of John Steinbeck’s First Book, “Cup of Gold”
Cup of Gold: A Life of Sir Henry Morgan, Buccaneer, with Occasional Reference to History (1929) was John Steinbeck’s first novel, a work of historical fiction based loosely on the life and death of 17th-century privateer Henry Morgan. It centres on Morgan’s assault and sacking of Panama City (the “Cup of Gold”), and the woman (La Santa Roja, or the Red Saint) he seeks there, reputed to be fairer than the sun.
Rare first edition of John Steinbeck’s first novel, “Cup of Gold: A Life of Henry Morgan, Buccaneer.” Robert M. McBride & Company: New York: 1929. The historical novel, of which only 1,537 first edition copies were printed, tells the story of the pirate’s sacking of Panama City. The 269pp. volume without dustjacket, measuring 5.25″ x 8.25″, has blue top edges, as present in the first edition copies. Minor wear to boards and separation of binding inside backstrip. Overall very good. Sold for $1,000.
