John L Sullivan Autograph Sold at Auction

John L. Sullivan was an Irish-American boxer nicknamed “Boston Strong Boy” and one of the most popular heavyweight boxing champions during the days of bare-knuckle boxing. He fought professionally between 1878 and 1905 and was one of the highest paid athletes at the time, reportedly earning a total of $1 million from his boxing career. Sullivan spent his days as a boxer also as an alcoholic, but following his retirement became a prohibition activist.

We at Nate D. Sanders sold a John L. Sullivan autograph letter signed for $1,415. Here are the item details:

ALS by first heavyweight boxing champion, John L. Sullivan. Composed 12 March 1907 in Patterson, New Jersey Sullivan writes: “Mr. John Wilson / My Dear John, I received your letter and was pleased to hear from you and to know that the wife and your self were well. Be sure and call and see me…I play the Lincoln Square Theater afternoon & night get down in the after noon if you can with the best-of-good wishes to you and Mrs. Wilson until I see you. Your friend at all times John L Sullivan.” Excellent condition. Sold for $1,415.

Thomas Hearns’ World Champion Boxing Diamond Ring — With 1/2 Carat Diamond at Center

Exceptional ring to commemorate Thomas Hearns’ first two World Championship fights in 1980 and 1982. 10-karat gold ring, sized 7.5, features a 1/2 carat diamond at center (SI3 quality and H in color), in the middle of a gold crown design atop a red colored cabouchon stone. Top of ring reads ”World Champion”. One side of ring reads ”Kronk Boxing Team” and ”Kim Craig”, Hearn’s wife, to whom this ring was given (presumably not to wear as it’s very large with a design resembling Super Bowl rings). The other side reads ”Thomas Hearns” next to an gold image of him above ”Two Times / 154 lbs. Dec. 3 1982 / 147 lbs. Aug. 2 1980”, referencing Hearns’ first two titles: WBA Welterweight defeating Pipino Cuevas on 2 August 1980, and WBC Super Welterweight defeating Wilfred Benitez on 3 December 1982. Very light wear and rubbing, otherwise near fine. Ring weighs a sold 36.3 grams. Sold for $1,172.

1919 Boxing Trophy for the British Expeditionary Force — Stunning Artifact of WWI Troops Stationed in France — From the Personal Collection of Malcolm S. Forbes

Stunning WWI artifact, an engraved British Boxing trophy from the personal collection of Malcolm S. Forbes. Presented in France in 1919 by the British Expeditionary Force to the First Battalion Royal Fusiliers as winners of the 17th Infantry Brigade Boxing Competition held at Baisieux, France. Polished and engraved with an inscription commemorating the win, trophy is also engraved with the date 18 January 1919, eleven months before the Armistice that ended World War I. Measures 9.5” tall. Fine. Sold for $1,250.

Ticket to the 22 November 1898 Corbett vs. Sharkey Boxing Match

Ticket to the controversial boxing match between Sailor Tom Sharkey and Gentleman Jim Corbett at the Lenox Athletic Club on 22 November 1898. The referee disqualified Corbett, known as the father of modern boxing midway through the bout, and Sharkey won by default. Measures 5.25” x 2.75”. Toning, else fine. Sold for $566.
