The use of these licenses was approved by the Continental Congress on 3 April 1776 and permitted over 1,000 private American ships to capture British ships and supplies. We sold a John Jay signed Letter of Marque and Reprisal, circa 1778, as President of the Continental Congress for $8,750. Measures about 8 x 12 inches and has been matted and framed.

John Jay, Alexander Hamilton and James Madison Signed “The Federalist Papers” Display
“The Federalist Papers” is a collection of 85 essays authored by Alexander Hamilton, James Madison and John Jay. These papers were intended to advocate for the newly proposed U.S. Constitution and to persuade the public for its ratification. We sold a matted display containing a copy of “The Federalist” along with signatures from Alexander Hamilton, John Jay and James Madison for $6,038.

John Jay Militia Appointment Signed as Governor
John Jay was governor of New York between 1795 and 1801. Some of his main accomplishments include reforming the legal system and signing The Act for the Gradual Abolition of Slavery, a huge stride in ending slavery in the North. This John Jay signed document is datelined Albany, New York, 22 March 1797 and appoints Gilbert Van Alen. Document measures 15 x 9.25 inches and is in very good condition.

John Jay Document Signed From 1757
We sold a John Jay document signed that is dated 10 May 1757. Jay orders the comptroller, Samuel Jones, to ”give your warrant on the Treasurer for the amount of the above amount…for…Expenses of government.” Document measures 8 x 2.25 inches and has been mounted to a backing sheet.

John Jay Autograph Letter Signed from 1795
John Jay was appointed as the first Chief Justice of the United States Supreme Court by George Washington in 1789. In this role he helped determine the powers of the Supreme Court and negotiated with Britain resulting in the Jay Treaty. We sold a John Jay autograph letter signed datelined New York, 20 September 1795, just months after resigning as Chief Justice. Letter notifies ”Mrs. Wentworth” that enclosed is ”a copy of the Inventory” and promises to send the colonel’s ”account…the moment he [Dr. Post] sends it to me.”
