All letters are written inside cards, addressed to his wife’s sister, Marylou DiGiorgio, and usually signed “Johnny!” All are additionally signed on the return address panel of the envelopes, “Gotti” along with his prison number.
In one letter, postmarked 13 October 1995, Gotti writes in part, “…I just finished a two day visit with Johnny [likely Johnny DiGiorgio, who served prison time for racketeering, loan-sharking and kidnapping after turning state’s witness]…Johnny also told me about his business plans – I think he’s headed in the right direction…some one sent me a copy of the book ‘Ageless Body, Timeless Mind.’ So I finally got to read it – amazing! Also my daughter Vicki sent me the novel ‘The NoteBook,’ by Nicholas Sparks – if you get a chance read it – much like ‘Bridges of Madison County’. I’m sure you’ll enjoy it. By the way, Johnny spent an hour telling me your thanksgiving day menu – and that you make everything from scratch, which takes at least two days – My mouth was watering – if it were possible you’d have a good customer in me – I’d even bring the wine!…Give Johnny and the children my love – know that I miss all of you…Love, Johnny!”
In another letter, postmarked 14 July 1993, Gotti writes, “…I received a letter tonight from Johnny – one of the things he writes is that your neighbor and friend – Donna passed away…You know my tennis pics both fell short of the mark!…Funny thing I wrote Johnny a letter asking certain questions – and the very next night I receive his letter asking almost the same things. Take Care, and smile. Love – Johnny!”. In Gotti’s last letter, postmarked 17 November 1995, Gotti wishes the family a “happy and healthy Thanksgiving day!…I’ve been working diligently on the motion for a new trial – which is to be presented by 12/15/95…as for me, I feel great!…Love and miss you – Love Johnny”. Cards measure 7.125″ x 5″. Tears to envelopes, only one affecting the very top of Gotti’s signature, overall in very good plus condition. Sold for $1,076.
