John F. Kennedy Typed Letter Signed as U.S. Senator, Regarding the Army-McCarthy Hearings — “…the appointment of Samuel Sears as counsel…to investigate the McCarthy-Army controversy…” — With PSA/DNA COA
Interesting John F. Kennedy typed letter signed as a U.S. Senator from Massachusetts, dated 8 April 1954. Letter pertains to the infamous 1954 Army-McCarthy hearings, that put John Kennedy in the tenuous position of defending Joseph McCarthy — a long-time friend of the Kennedy family whose committee employed his brother Robert — and acceding to mounting pressure from Democrats to stop McCarthy’s communist inquest. When the Senate officially censured McCarthy on 2 December 1954 by a vote of 67 to 22, JFK was listed as absent, as he was in the hospital undergoing back surgery, and warned that censure might have serious repercussions for “the social fabric of this country.” Upon his U.S. Senate letterhead, Kennedy writes to a constituent in Massachusetts regarding the resignation of Samuel Sears as the committee’s lead counsel; Sears, an outspoken advocate of Senator McCarthy, was forced to resign only days after his appointment due to pressure from Democrats. Letter reads in full: “Dear Mr. Dalrymple: Thank you for writing me of your interest in the appointment of Samuel Sears as counsel for the special Subcommittee to investigate the McCarthy-Army controversy. As you know, of course, Mr. Sears, after lengthy consultation with the Subcommittee members, has resigned as counsel. With every good wish, I am Sincerely yours, John Kennedy”. Letter measures 6.25″ x 9.25″ on one page, with two folds, else near fine. Accompanied by a COA from PSA/DNA. Sold for $2,517.
