Lot of ”Prince Valiant” original artwork, comprising both the John Cullen Murphy Sunday comic strip art, and the Hal Foster preliminary sketch, both #1824 in the series, published 23 January 1972. Comic strip is rendered in ink over graphite, with some red key lines, on two sections of illustration board, conjoined on verso to measure approximately 17” x 25”. Paste-up of logo and lettering. Light wear, overall in very good condition.
The Hal Foster preliminary artwork comprises two pieces, one in pencil and ink wash on board, and one in pencil on paper, closely matching the finished strip, and accompanied by a separate typed story outline, and typed story narration. Artwork measures 8.875” x 11.375” and 8.5” x 11” respectively, and story sheets each measure 8” x 10.5”. Paperclip impression to ink wash art, chipping to edge of pencil sketch, and three hole punch. Overall in very good condition. From the John Cullen Murphy estate. Sold for $4,326.
Lot of ”Prince Valiant” original artwork, comprising both the John Cullen Murphy Sunday comic strip art, and the Hal Foster preliminary sketch, both #2120 in the series, published 25 September 1977. Comic strip is rendered in ink over graphite, with some red key lines and blue editorial notes, on three sections of illustration board, conjoined on verso to measure approximately 16.5” x 22.5”. Paste-up of logo and lettering. Light wear, overall in very good condition.
The Hal Foster preliminary pencil artwork has the Prince Valiant label at top, and closely matches the finished strip, accompanied by a separate typed story outline, and typed story narration.
