Joe Rosenthal Signed Iwo Jima Flag Raising 8.5″ x 11″
Joseph John Rosenthal (October 9, 1911 – August 20, 2006) was an American photographer who received the Pulitzer Prize for his iconic World War II photograph Raising the Flag on Iwo Jima, taken during the 1945 Battle of Iwo Jima. His picture became one of the best-known photographs of the war, and was replicated as the United States Marine Corps War Memorial in Arlington, Virginia.
Photographer Joe Rosenthal signed photo of the famous flag raising on Iwo Jima, when U.S. Marines took control of the crucial island during World War II. Rosenthal signs the 8.5″ x 11″ photo on the lower photographic border, “Joe Rosenthal / Mt. Suribachi / Iwo Jima / Feb. 23, 1945” in blue ballpoint. Photo is also signed in black felt-tip by 23 Medal of Honor recipients, including Robert E. O’Malley, the first MOH recipient in Vietnam. With two first day of issue cancellations and three stamps, including the 3 cent Iwo Jima flag raising stamp issued in 1945. Minor dings at corners, overall near fine condition. Sold for $1,523.
