Impressive set of nine eyeglasses owned and worn by nine U.S. Presidents, with many accompanied by signed photos and letters from the Presidents. Set includes eyeglasses worn by nearly every post-WWII President, including: Harry S. Truman, Lyndon B. Johnson, Richard Nixon, Gerald Ford, Jimmy Carter, Ronald Reagan, George H.W. Bush, Bill Clinton and George W. Bush, all gifted to the Museum of Ophthalmology, and each framed in its own presentation shadowbox.
President Jimmy Carter’s owned and worn pair of ”his personal” Foremost, U.S.A. browline eyeglasses. Glasses have thick plastic frame fading black to clear, and diamond shaped cartouches at endpieces, in size 5 1/2 measuring 5.25” from endpiece to endpiece. Framed in a shadowbox with a copy of Carter’s letter dated 27 January 1992 reading, ”…I am pleased to send you a pair of my personal eyeglasses for the museum’s collection…” Shadowbox frame measures 29.5” x 16.5” x 2.875” deep, in near fine condition with light surface wear. Sold for $31,250.

Beautiful Lenox china dinner plate made for the Carter White House, with an emerald-jade color known as “Carter green” accenting an ivory center and three bands of gold, the widest outer band made of raised stars. The Presidential seal in gilt at 12:00 completes the style, which was ordered specifically for formal state dinners, but which arrived too late in 1980 to be used in the Executive Mansion, and is instead displayed at the Carter Presidential Library; the service is particularly rare as a result. Plate is marked on the underside, “President Jimmy Carter / 1980 / Lenox”. Plate measures 10.5″ in diameter. Near fine condition. Sold for $1,750.

Dated 11 May 1977, Carter writes, ”…I am deeply concerned and disappointed…My recommendations…were the result of a careful, thorough and detailed review…These cost-swing [sic] measures would save the American taxpayer near $4 billion…If wasteful spending is to be curtailed, necessary programs financed, and the Budget balanced by FY 1981, the Congress will have to assist me in eliminating needless and counterproductive projects…[signed] Jimmy”. 1pp. on White House letterhead measures 7” x 10.5”.
