The Grateful Dead was a rock group formed in Palo Alto during the counterculture movement of the 1960s. Founding members included Jerry Garcia, Bob Weir, Ron McKernan, Phil Lesh and Bill Kreutzmann. The band had a three decade career until Garcia’s death in 1995 and released 13 studio albums between 1967 and 1989. Seven of their studio albums were certified gold in the United States and four were platinum or double platinum. The Grateful Dead was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1994.

Grateful Dead Contract Signed — Signed by Six Members Including Jerry Garcia
Grateful Dead contract signed by six members of the eclectic and legendary band that defies classification. Last page of fourteen page contract is signed in order, “Jerry Garcia”, “Mickey Hart”, “Bill Kreutzmann”, “Phil Lesh”, “Brent Mydland” and “Bob Weir”. Undated, though likely in the 1980’s when Brent Mydland played with the band. Single page is in near fine condition with filing holes to left margin and staple marks to upper left corner. Sold for $1,883.
Michael Jackson’s famous glove worn at the 1984 American Music Awards, accompanied by an autograph book signed four times, attesting to the authenticity of the glove; Jackson writes, ”My original glove / Love / M.J*”. Regarded globally as the greatest entertainer in recorded history, the 25-year old was honored at the 16 January 1984 ceremony for his record ”Thriller,” the best-selling album of all time. The Grammy awards he won that same year made his award-winning volume unprecedented. A radiant Jackson was heavily photographed wearing this glove at the AMA’s, and video footage documents him wearing it in each of his numerous and effusive acceptance speeches that evening. A gloved right hand had been a trademark of Jackson’s, but typically the star wore the glove in white. This is likely the first example of Jackson wearing a black glove to an award show and possibly even the first for any public appearance. Of the glove’s singularity, Jackson told Barbara Walters in a 1999 interview, ”Why one glove? Cooler than two.” He also speaks about it in his autobiography ”Moonwalk.” Extensive provenance includes documentation from Julien’s as well as news clippings and photos from the first owner of the glove after Jackson: a terminally ill boy named David Smithee, to whom Jackson gifted the glove upon a visit arranged by a charity. Jackson later named Smithee in the dedication of the Jacksons’ ”Victory” album: ”…Finally, best wishes and love to…our friend, little David Smithy [sic].” Included in the lot is the autograph book in which Jackson penned a COA for the child in black felt tip: ”My original glove / Love / M.J*”. He signs ”Michael Jackson” to three additional pages. Red velvet book with gilt lettering and all edges gilt measures 5.75” x 4.5”. Dark brown cloth glove is encrusted with black Swarovsky crystal beading and features a single snap closure. Custom-sewn glove bears no size labeling. Measures 8.75” at its longest from cuff to fingertip and 4.25” across the center. Two stones are inconspicuously absent from the seam on the outer edge of the cuff and two from the second finger, with sunning to the seam around the thumb, else near fine. A stunning artifact worn and owned by the entertainer of the century at the height of his superstardom. Sold for $199,069.
One of the most covered and influential songs of all time, ”Like a Rolling Stone” lyrics are here handwritten and signed by their creator, Bob Dylan. With this song, Dylan reinvigorated his passion for his own work and fully embraced rock music (”play it fucking loud” he told his band) as a complement to folk. Clocking in at 6 1/2 minutes long, the song was initially thought too long to be commercially successful, until listeners in the mid-60s harassed radio stations to play it in its entirety. ”Like a Rolling Stone” has been covered by Jimi Hendrix, The Rolling Stones and countless others, and inspired even more. Bruce Springsteen first heard it when he was 15 years old: ”on came that snare shot that sounded like somebody’d kicked open the door to your mind…The way that Elvis freed your body, Dylan freed your mind, and showed us that because the music was physical did not mean it was anti-intellect. He had the vision and talent to make a pop song so that it contained the whole world. He invented a new way a pop singer could sound, broke through the limitations of what a recording could achieve, and he changed the face of rock’n’roll for ever and ever.” Perhaps the greatest mystery in music is trying to figure out who Dylan is referring to in the song — even Andy Warhol has been mentioned — but ultimately, rock historians believe it speaks to anyone, even Dylan himself, who eschews an easy, pretentious life for one that is riskier but ultimately more fulfilling, with ”nothing to lose” and ”no secrets to conceal”. Single page measures 8.5” x 11”. In near fine condition. With COA from Jeff Rosen, Bob Dylan’s manager. Sold for $90,000.
The original Ludwig drum kit used for the recording of ”Love Me Do”, The Beatles’ first single on their first album ”Please Please Me”, released on 22 March 1963 and ushering in Beatlemania. The session was recorded on 11 September 1962 at EMI London, with this recording of ”Love Me Do” used on the Beatles’ first album ”Please Please Me” as well as the first Beatles U.S. release of ”Love Me Do” and the 1982 re-release of the song. In addition to ”Love Me Do”, this Ludwig drum kit is also heard on ”P.S. I Love You”, which plays on the B-side of the British single and on the ”Please Please Me” album. The kit was played by Andy White during the recording session, who played with the Fab Four that day, with Ringo playing tambourine on ”Love Me Do”. Kit comprises a 14” x 22” bass drum, 16” x 16” floor tom, 9” x 13” tom-tom (which is date-stamped 1956 inside) and 5.5” x 14” snare. Drum head is new. The original Black Diamond Pearl wrapping is present and matches exactly the photo of White playing the drum kit. From the personal collection of Clive Edwards, who studied drum playing under Reg Weller, one of Andy White’s best friends. Weller procured the kit for Edwards after White secured an endorsement deal with Ajax drums. With an LOA from Thea White, the widow of Andy White. Sold for $67,500.
Eddie Van Halen Personally Designed, Stage Played & Signed Guitar
Eddie Van Halen personally designed (hand-striped) custom guitar, owned and played onstage by Eddie at the 16 February 2008 show in Jacksonville, Florida. Charvel guitar is signed by Eddie in silver marker, with the Jacksonville concert date also written by him as well as ”Van Halen ’08”. In custom EVH (Eddie Van Halen) Charvel guitar case, and with COA signed by Eddie Van Halen showing serial number of 173, matching EVH plate on guitar. Near fine condition. A fantastic rock collectible personally designed, played and signed by one of the greatest guitar players of all time. Sold for $37,500.
David Crosby’s Own Gibson ES-335 Guitar — From His Days in “The Byrds”
David Crosby’s personally owned and played Gibson guitar, used by Crosby in “The Byrds,” one of the most influential bands of the 1960’s. Crosby’s role in “The Byrds” from the iconic group’s formation in 1964 until his departure in 1967 garnered him his first of two inductions into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Guitar is the widely recognized Gibson ES-335, with a Bigsby Vibrato tailpiece tremolo. Dating to 1958, this model was the first electric guitar to introduce the semi-hollow body design. Neck is one-piece mahogany beneath a rosewood fingerboard with mother of pearl inlays. Measures 16.5″ wide, 20″ long, and 1.75″ deep. Housed in a black hardshell case lined in orange velvet. Scattered nicks and bumping to top of headstock, else near fine. With an LOA from David Crosby. Sold for $25,428.
Charming Beatles Autographs on a Photo With Funny Inscriptions by John, Paul, George and Ringo — “Why Don’t You Get A Job? Good heavens from John Lennon”
Charming publicity photograph of The Beatles sipping from china tea cups, with all of the Beatles autographs on verso in various inks with facetious messages by The Fab Four: “To Roy, why don’t you get a job? good heavens from John Lennon” with a hand-drawn crucifix motif; “To Roy you’re fired! you may think this is a joke, but if we come back soon, you’ll see…Paul McCartney”; “Why don’t you just piss off! George Harrison”; and, “To Roy, the best barman in L.A, Ringo Starr”. Additionally inscribed and signed “To Mother Roy it’s been fun nowing [sic] you Neil Aspinall” and further annotated in an unknown hand. Glossy photo measures 6″ x 8″. Diagonal crease across upper right of photo, some dampstaining and fingerprints on verso, else near fine. A rare, fantastic piece showing the Fab Four’s playful wit. Sold for $10,470.
Very rare and lengthy autograph letter signed by Bon Scott, the AC/DC lead singer named #1 ”Greatest Frontmen of All Time” by ”Classic Rock” magazine. Scott writes to a lady friend Valerie while touring in 1978, referencing AC/DC’s live album, a grueling tour schedule, Phil Rudd and much more. Though undated, content dates the letter to 1978 during AC/DC’s ”Powerage” tour, and Scott tells Valerie he’s writing from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, further dating it to late August, 1978.
Three page letter on Hilton stationery reads in full, ”Hi Valerie, Well as you can see Bon’s in Down Town Pitsburgh [sic] today. I’ve just come over from the west coast where I spent a couple of days in L.A. doing Midnight Special. I went to see Doug’s new band the other night playing a place called La Cantino El Paso which is down Long Beach & boy he had me in stitches. He’s playing really well & singing like a bird. Don’t know if he told you but I rang him a few weeks ago to see if he would fill in for Phillip for a while as Phil had a bit of a nervous breakdown & had to spend a lot of time with a shrink. It was really bad but luckily he got over it quickly enough not to upset the band. We had to treat him with kid gloves for a bit but he’s ok now. It’s a pity, but I won’t be down your way for at least two or three months. The rest of this stage of the tour is around Pensylvania [sic] & N.Y. state but being out of sight don’t mean out of mind. I know I’m pretty slack when it comes to letters & phone calls but I’m always travelling or drunk or hungover or…or…today I’m shaking so much I can hardly write but I have been meaning to write you for weeks so today I’m doing it. I had to stop making phone calls when I got too much in the red with the money situation. I’m already about $130 into this weeks wages but about two weeks ago I owed the band about $70 on pay day & that’s crazy. But being crazy is about the only way to keep my sanity if you know what I mean. We’ve worked so much since I saw you last that it’s all one hell of a blur. Must have been across the country & up & down it a million times & I’m beggining [sic] to feel & look just a little haggard. I’d love to check myself in to a sanitarium for a month but after this tour it’s straight to Europe & England for a month & then back here for the winter-end of the year so the next time you see me it might be in a geriatric ward. My hair looks like a busby but I’m just going to let it go on growing & be a hippy again for a while. I know I’m making it sound that life’s hard at the moment but I’m not complaining cause there’s always good times & we’re selling lots of records & making people happy so it can’t be all that bad. I’m going to go home to Mums at the end of the year & spend a month on the beach before tearing into it all again. Oh we finished our live album a few weeks ago in New York. I had to re-record about five concerts cause the vocals were not as good sound wise as the[y] had to be from all the michrophone [sic] spill from the guitars & things. I was allright (ahem) it sounds great & it’ll look good hanging on the Xmas trees. I don’t know when it’ll be out but I’ll try & get you a special copy. They might put some out in red vinyl although I prefer them in platinum myself. Gotta go baby. I just got the half hour call & I have to phone New York. I’d love to hear from you before I leave the States. Say hi to the family for me…& how was Mum…Tell her hello from The Bon. / Love you Valerie / Bon X”.

Bob Dylan Signed Double Album ”Blonde on Blonde”
Bob Dylan signed album, ”Blonde on Blonde”, one of rock’s first double albums released in 1966. Many consider it one of the greatest rock albums of all time, with the classic songs ”Just Like a Woman”, ”Visions of Johanna”, ”I Want You” and ”Rainy Day Women #12 & 35”. Signed by Dylan on the famous blurred focus cover. Measures 12.25” square. Signature has been authenticated by Bob Dylan’s manager and album is from the stock of the manager and Bob Dylan. Near fine condition. Sold for $8,000.
Rare Bob Marley signed ”Exodus” album, inscribed by the legend in black felt-tip, ”Rasta Fari Live / Bob Marley”. Released in 1977 shortly after the assassination attempt on Marley’s life, ”Exodus” is considered his masterpiece, with more tracks on his greatest hits album ”Legend” than any other album, including ”Jamming”, ”Waiting in Vain”, ”Exodus”, ”Three Little Birds” and ”One Love”. Some abrasion to spine with partial loss, and some light ringwear, more so to the bottom. Very good condition. Vinyl sleeve and record included, which is in very good plus condition with just a few minute scuffs. With Roger Epperson COA. A rare signed piece by Marley, ideal for display. Sold for $7,563.
Queen signed contract to promote their breakout album ”Sheer Heart Attack” featuring their first hit, ”Killer Queen”. Dated 7 January 1975, contract is boldly signed by all four band members: Freddie Mercury, Brian May, John Deacon and Roger Taylor, representing a concert in Queen’s first world tour as a headlining act. Contract with concert promoter Belkin Productions is for the performance on 8 February 1975 at Music Hall in Cleveland, which would be videotaped for later TV and radio broadcasts. Four page contract on two sheets measures 8.625” x 14”. Single fold, not affecting signatures, and light haloing to May and Taylor’s signatures. Overall very good condition. Accompanied by a Promoter pass to the concert and five photos, date-stamped 19 February 1975 on verso, as well as COAs from Belkin Productions and Roger Epperson. Sold for $4,834.
Charles Schulz original hand-drawing of Snoopy, signed by Schulz. Illustration of Snoopy in a ranger’s hat and backpack was used for a poster to promote the ”Open Nature” concert on 27 April 1999, with members of the Grateful Dead playing. Drawing is accompanied by the concert poster, signed by Grateful Dead members Bob Weir, Phil Lesh, Mickey Hart and by Van Halen frontman Sammy Hagar. Illustration of Snoopy is complemented by a nature scene of mountains and trees, drawn by Brooks Anderson, and signed ”Brooks ’99”. Lot also includes a laminated pass to the event, also showing the illustration of Snoopy. Schulz illustration measures 8” x 10” inside of black frame measuring 12.5” x 14.5”. Poster measures 13” x 19.5” inside of gold frame measuring 17.5” x 22”. Near fine. Sold for $3,933.
Watkins Glen “Summer Jam” Concert Poster — Allman Brothers Band, Grateful Dead & The Band — First Printing
Original and scarce first printing of the “Summer Jam” Concert poster, which took place 28 July 1973 at the Watkins Glen Grand Prix Raceway in New York. Poster measures 16.25″ x 22.5″ with colorful, psychedelic nymph-like imagery, including the iconic Grateful Dead skull and roses insignia. Reads in part: “…The Grateful Dead plus friends & surprises. Saturday, July 28 from 12 noon on / Tickets: $10 includes parking & camping…” With “Scoop Printing Co.” printed at lower right, indicating it as a first printing. Near fine. Sold for $1,903.
