Large Jefferson Davis Signed Photo Display in Original 18″ x 21.5″ Gilt-Etched Frame

Jefferson Davis photo display signed. Full-length portrait of Davis bears his autograph inscription to the photographer Bendann Brothers’ border, upon which photo is mounted. Dedication to his nephew Maunsell White of Deer Range, Louisiana reads, “Affectionately your friend / and uncle / Jefferson Davis”. Other notations by unknown hands are present at the lower left and top center. Framed in its original antique wooden frame with gilt decoration to an overall size of 18″ x 21.5″. Toning and fading to image, else near fine. Sold for $4,382.

Confederate President, Jefferson Davis signed CDV portrait photo. Signed boldly in black fountain pen, ”Jeffn Davis”. Photograph was taken by C.R. Rees & Co. in Richmond, Virginia, capital of the Confederate States of America during the Civil War. With blind-embossed CSA seal on front and verso. Photo and mount measures 2.375” x 3.875”. Very good to near fine condition. With University Archives COA. Sold for $3,500.

Franklin Pierce Military Appointment Signed as President — Countersigned by Jefferson Davis

Franklin Pierce military appointment signed as President on 23 July 1856, countersigned by then Secretary of War Jefferson Davis. Prominently signed “Franklin Pierce”, document appoints one George P. Shrie as 2nd Lieutenant in the 3rd Artillery Regiment. Partially printed document measures 14″ x 18.5″, framed to 40.5″ x 28″. Weighs 16 lbs. Toning and folds, one through signature, and light discoloration to upper left. Very good plus condition. Sold for $2,963.

Confederate President, Jefferson Davis signed CDV portrait photo. Signed boldly in black fountain pen, ”Jeffn Davis”. Photograph was taken by C.R. Rees & Bro. in Richmond, Virginia, capital of the Confederate States of America during the Civil War. CDV measures 2.375” x 4”. Trimmed right edge and some foxing, otherwise near fine. Sold for $2,250.

Jefferson Davis Autograph Letter Signed — ”…many thanks for your…invitation to attend the Reunion of the Survivors of the 3d Georgia Regiment…”

Jefferson Davis autograph letter signed. Letter dated 25 July 1887 is addressed to Col. Snead and reads in part, ”…many thanks for your…invitation to attend the Reunion of the Survivors of the 3d Georgia Regiment…pertaining to ‘men who still love the cause for which they fought’…” 2pp. letter on two delicate sheets of ruled linen stationery measures 5.5” x 9”. Pencil notation with Davis’ name to verso of one sheet, and slight separation at fold intersections, else near fine. Sold for $1,628.

Jefferson Davis Excellent & Rare Confederate Content Autograph Quotation Signed — ”…must be evident to even a careless observer of our race…”

Jefferson Davis autograph quotation signed from his book, ”The Rise and Fall of the Confederate Government.” This lengthy quotation from the former Confederate President’s memoir was made ”To the Ladies of the Fair at Bangor, with the respects of Jefferson Davis.” In full: ”That the affection, the mutual desire for the mutual good, which existed among our Fathers, may be weakened in succeeding generations by the Denial of right and by hostile demonstrations, until the equality guaranteed but not secured within the Union, may be sought for without it; must be evident to even a careless observer of our race. It is time to be up and doing. There is yet time to remove the causes of dissension and alienation, which are now distracting, and have for years past divided the country.” Single page measures 5” x 6.5”. Undated, though circa 1885. Matted with an engraving of Davis to an overall size of 13.75” x 11”. Toning to paper, otherwise near fine. Sold for $1,562.

Franklin Pierce Document Signed as President

President Franklin Pierce adds his large signature to a document, dated 3 February 1854, appointing Milton Hall to a four-year term as Naval Officer for the naval district of Newport, Rhode Island. The President signs, ”Franklin Pierce”. Secretary of Treasury James Guthrie countersigns below the blindstamped seal of the Treasury Department. 16.25” x 12.5” document is archivally matted and framed to an overall size of 24.5” x 21”. Moderate separation at folds and paper loss to document; small chips on edges of frame. Very good. Sold for $1,109.

Jefferson Davis Document Signed as Secretary of War in 1857 — Davis Tells West Point Student That ”…the President of the United States has…conditionally appointed you a Cadet…”

Jefferson Davis document signed as Secretary of War on 4 February 1857, approximately five years before he became President of the Confederate States of America. This West Point document is printed on Department of War stationery and appoints a William H. Thomson as Cadet. Letter reads in part, ”You are hereby notified that the President of the United States has, this day, conditionally appointed you a Cadet…In January next, you will be examined before the Academic Board”. Four page card-style document measures 7.5” x 9.25”, signed on the first page by Davis. Intersecting folds, minor staining on bottom of first page, easily framed out, and minor staining on other pages. Very good condition. Sold for $1,000.
