Napoleon Bonaparte letter signed with exceptional content regarding funding his vast armies which, by 1811 when this letter was written, encompassed almost all of Europe and with preparations to invade Russia in the works. Dated 21 April 1811, letter translates in part, ”Count Mollien, I cannot sign this partial decree. It is necessary that you agree beforehand with the Minister of War Administration. It results from your report that, if you paid 4/5th of the 42 millions, he would have received only 27 million, and that you had 40 million paid. But the minister’s budget, considering the extraordinary arming which is being done, must be increased to 160 millions. Thereupon, I pray to God that he keeps you under his Holy protection. / Napoleon”. Single page measures 7.25” x 9”. Folds and light uniform toning, overall near fine. Sold for $5,125.
Napoleon Bonaparte Letter Signed, With an Exceptionally Large Signature
Napoleon Bonaparte letter signed, with an exceptionally large signature filling half the page. Bonaparte writes to one of his closest allies in the French government, Michel-Louis-Etienne Regnaud de Saint-Jean d’Angely, who then served as president of the Interior at the Council of State.
Datelined Paris on 3 January 1810, Napoleon writes in part, translated from the French, ”I read with interest the table you sent to me on the situation of the budget of cities in 1808. This leads me to extend the measure and to submit to the Council of State the budgets of cities whose income does not rise more than 5000 francs. I see that the cities have 14 million of assets and 85 million of liabilities…I would like you to send me a report on these debts on the mechanism adopted to the amortization fund to turn them off and on what there would be to do for that and to bring them up to date. I see that the municipal expenses amount to 8 million which seems to me a very high sum. Reviewing the table, I see the City of Niort, which is paid for 216 thousand francs in annuities and the granting of which is 140 thousand francs. There must be something against the law about this amount because the grant from Niort cannot return 140,000 francs…”

Napoleon Bonaparte document signed as Commanding General of the Army of Italy, dated 1797 at which time Napoleon was a rising star in French politics, even remotely coordinating a coup against Royalists in Paris. Partly printed document features a military vignette at top, and Napoleon’s title as General in Chief of the Army of Italy. Untranslated text in French concludes with Napoleon’s bold signature, ”Bonaparte”. Measures 9.25” x 15”. Small separations starting at folds and mild dampstaining in spots; overall very good plus condition. Sold for $4,061.

Document signed by Napoleon Bonaparte, who boldly signs ”Bonaparte” at upper left, a signature he used as he was gaining power in the early 1800’s. Document in French concerns the memorial service of a member of the French army. Measures 7.75” x 12”, matted and framed to 13.75” x 18”. Slight detachment to upper corner of frame and uniform toning to document. Very good condition. With PSA/DNA COA. Sold for $3,125.
Napoleon Bonaparte autograph note signed as general-in-chief of the French Army in Italy during the First Italian Campaign in the French Revolutionary Wars. Bonaparte here orders the arrest of a Genoa governor. Written in French, it translates: ”Send to General to carry out right away the mission suggested by citizen [Minister] Faipoult. / The general in chief / Bonaparte”. He writes the order upon a letter sent to him by Guillaume Charles Faipoult de Maisoncelle, French minister to Genoa. Also written in French, it’s datelined Genoa, 17th of Vendemiaire [October] in the 5th year of the French Republic [1796]. The minister reports: ”…Another new arrest of the 46 recruits who were sent here for Naples and who stopped in Novi, where Governor Oliveri gave them a certificate and declared them for the King of Naples…” Napoleon’s signed note appears on the upper margin of the first page of the minister’s 2pp. letter on 2 sheets. Measures 8.5” x 12”. Near fine. Matted in a gilt wooden frame to an overall size of 46.25” x 28.75”. Document is flanked by a printed translation and a print of Jacques-Louis David’s 1812 portrait called ”The Emperor Napoleon in His Study at the Tuileries.” Sliver of chipping to frame left and bottom edges, else near fine. Napoleon Bonaparte 1810 Document Signed — Regarding the Re-Opening of An Italian Church
Napoleon Bonaparte document signed, dated 28 November 1810. Written in French and signed by Ferdinando Marescalchi, Italian Secretary of State, who addresses Napoleon as ”the Emperor of the French, King of Italy, Protector of the Confederation of the Rhine”. Here, Marescalchi petitions on behalf of ”the People of Guastalla” for Napoleon to reopen the Church of Religious Servants in Guastalla, Italy, which had been closed during the French Revolution under an increased period of de-Christianization and religious suppression. Napoleon signs p.1 of document with an ”Accorde” written in Napoleon’s hand, or ”agreed” translated into English, as he concurred with Maresalchi’s request. Card-style document measures 8” x 12.25” and has text to front and verso of p. 1. Very minor toning, else near fine. Sold for $2,188.
Napoleon document signed ”Bonaparte” on elaborately engraved ”Republique Francaise” letterhead, also engraved ”Bonaparte General en Chef de L’Armee d’Italie.” Datelined General Headquarters of Verona, 24 November 1796, Napoleon writes to General Baraguay d’Hilliers while conducting the Italian campaign, ”You will, General, have deported from the territories occupied by the French Army, the ten French priests about whom you reported to Milan in your letter the 28th of Brumaire. / Bonaparte / You will find here attached an account of an outing made by the garrison of Mantua. You will see that the outcome was not advantageous. You will have it printed.” Intriguing single-page document measures 10” x 14”. Toned and worn right border, else near fine.
