James Montgomery Flagg Art for sale

James Montgomery Flagg art is mostly known for his famous illustrations of the early 20th century.  We at NateDSanders.com Auctions, have sold a bunch of James Montgomery Flagg art, but here are our best three James Montgomery Flagg art examples:

James Montgomery Flagg Art, Signed Sketch of His Most Famous American Artwork: Uncle Sam’s ”I Want You!”

Exceptionally scarce original charcoal sketch created and signed James Montgomery Flagg art piece of his iconic ”I Want You!” artwork, used by the U.S. Army in 1917 to recruit for World War I. Perhaps nothing embodies the physical representation of America more than this artwork, which finally put a face to ”Uncle Sam”, the nickname for the United States since the Revolutionary War. In the build-up to America’s entry into WWI, this image was originally featured on the 6 July 1916 cover of Leslie magazine with the text ”What are you doing for preparedness?”. The words ”I Want You” were added in February 1917, shortly after the U.S. intercepted code from Germany, encouraging Mexico to ally itself with Germany to fight the United States. Recognizing that war was imminent, the U.S. Army ordered posters for recruitment efforts, and an American icon was born. Likely created in the early 1940s, when the image was also used for WWII recruitment, this is the only known original artwork by Flagg of his iconic creation, apart from the 1916 original. Measures 24.5” x 34.5”. Tape along top edge on verso, and affixed to mat at bottom left corner. Light rippling along top and bottom edge and minimal charcoal offsetting near bottom. Overall in very good to near fine condition, striking in its size and presentation.  This James Montgomery Flagg art piece sold for $25,000.

James Montgomery Flagg Art, A Charcoal Portrait of Jean Harlow by Famed Illustrator

James Montgomery Flagg art, a charcoal portrait of actress Jean Harlow. The foremost early 20th century illustrator is best known for his iconic “Uncle Sam Wants YOU” recruitment poster from WWI, but his vast body of work runs the gamut from the political to the cinematic. Flagg’s renditions of Hollywood royalty were commissioned to grace “Photoplay” covers from 1936-1938. “Photoplay,” published by McFadden, was the most prominent film magazine of its time among fans and industry alike, and sponsored the first awards ceremonies for cinematic achievements. With red as the only color added to Harlow’s image, this piece is characteristic of Flagg’s Photoplay line of portraits. Harlow joins Bette Davis, Gloria Swanson, Norma Shearer, Shirley Temple, Claudette Colbert, Carole Lombard, and Joan Crawford as Photoplay cover girls, all of whom Flagg styled in this manner. The captivating film actress Jean Harlow was among the magazine’s favorite faces, appearing on the covers of the August 1932 issue, May 1935 and March 1937. Her untimely death at age 26 was a loss felt deeply by the industry and left her public shocked and devastated. Harlow pioneered the blonde bombshell image, and is often said to have paved the way for Marilyn Monroe’s platinum persona. Signed “James Montgomery Flagg” to the lower right. Measures 13.75″ x 17.25″. Toning, very light foxing and a minor tear to the right edge, else near fine. A stunning portrait of a style icon at the height of her influence, drawn by one of the most widely-recognized purveyors of cultural imagery in America in the 1930’s.  A very high price realize for James Montgomery Flagg art.   This James Montgomery Flagg art piece sold for $6,863.

Crawford joins Bette Davis, Gloria Swanson, Norma Shearer, Shirley Temple, Claudette Colbert, Carole Lombard and Jean Harlow as Photoplay cover girls, all styled by Flagg in this manner. Crawford began her career as a dancer and cultivated an alluring image with a flapper persona.
