Henry Clay Sr. (April 12, 1777 – June 29, 1852) was an American attorney and statesman who represented Kentucky in both the U.S. Senate and House of Representatives. He was the seventh House speaker as well as the ninth secretary of state, also receiving electoral votes for president in the 1824, 1832, and 1844 presidential elections. He helped found both the National Republican Party and the Whig Party. For his role in defusing sectional crises, he earned the appellation of the “Great Compromiser” and was part of the “Great Triumvirate” of Congressmen, alongside fellow Whig Daniel Webster and John C. Calhoun.

Henry Clay autograph letter signed dated 15 January 1843 from New Orleans. Clay writes to his friend, Judge John J. Crittenden, during a time of personal reflection regarding slavery — Clay freed two of his slaves in 1840 (a mother and her daughter, after an unsuccessful lawsuit by the mother), and would free the woman’s son a year after this letter. Here, Clay asks his friend to obtain a copy of the Supreme Court case of Groves vs. Slaughter, which decided whether a state law limiting the sale of slaves violated Congress’ authority to control commerce. Letter reads in part, ”…I would be very much obliged to you, if you would obtain for me with as little delay as possible…a copy of the opinion of the judges of the S. [Supreme] Court in the case of Slaughter (the Mississippi Slave case) decided term before the last, certified in the form to be used as evidence in a Court of Justice. Our friend Peters perhaps could assist you in procuring it, if the opinions are not recorded. Your friend, H. Clay”. Card style letter measuring 8” x 10” displays expected toning, creasing and light soiling. Some paper residue from previous mounting remains. Overall very good condition. Sold for $2,886.
Henry Clay Twice Signed Autograph Letter as Secretary of State — With Free Franked Envelope
Henry Clay handwritten letter, dated 12 December 1826, during his term as Secretary of State under John Quincy Adams. The letter to Col. Rochester reads in part: ”…I…transmit you the enclosed note…which I hope will prove satisfactory. Mrs. Rochester is in the District and well. We hope to see her frequently. Yours faithfully. H. Clay”. He also initials a postscript and signs a free frank on the address panel. Significant toning and separation to folds of 8” x 10” single page card style letter. Good condition. Sold for $468.
Founding member of the Whig party, Henry Clay letter signed as Secretary of State under John Quincy Adams. Written from the State Department, Washington DC on 25 October 1825, Clay writes, ”In compliance with the request contained in your Letter to me of the 29th August last, I enclose, herewith, a copy of the table alluded to therein, and which you desired from this Department – They delay in transmitting it, before this time, has been unavoidable, otherwise you would have received it at an earlier day…[signed] H Clay”. 7.5” x 9.5” letter is nicely framed with an engraving of Clay, measuring 20.75” x 16” in total. Folds to letter, else near fine. Sold for $313.
