Helen Keller Typed Letter Signed re Teacher Annie Sullivan

Helen Keller lengthy typed letter signed. Dated 4 February 1933, letter reads in full, “Dear Adelyn / When I heard about your call on the telephone this morning, I blushed from ear to ear! But, to be perfectly honest, it hasn’t been altogether my fault that you haven’t heard from me. I wrote my Christmas thank-you according to code and left the other ‘Musketeers’ to ‘O.K.’ my letter. Teacher said I had written over a line, and anyway it wasn’t that much of a letter, as I had said nothing about her gift. Then interruptions came one after the other, and now I find myself in a predicament embarrassing to my conscience. When I demanded to have the letter read to me, it couldn’t be found! Teacher said, ‘Just write another,’ but where, O where is the Christmas feeling — the atmosphere of surprise and delight? I know you will understand and forgive me, you are that kind of sweet friend. Nevertheless, I feel out of tune with the Christmas season. True, I have your dainty gift which I love. The scarf feels as if it had been woven out of peach blossoms and butterfly wings! And teacher adores her cigarette case. Nobody ever gave her one before, and she is very proud of it, she says, ‘At least I don’t seem a Methuselah to Adelyn, or she wouldn’t have give it to me.’ I hope Polly remembered to thank you for her present this morning. That isn’t my responsibility. What vexes me about the telephone is, they tell all the news, and leave me to balance the budget as I best can. Beside work, work there is nothing to report — not a baby born — only two puppies that died immediately, no doctor’s visits — thank goodness! Just one call at the dentist’s one party without you, which disappointed us all. There is some talk of our going to Miami in March. I hope it will materialize if Teacher will go with us, I hate to leave her alone with only the dogs to look after her. I am eager for your visit and your news. If this weather continues, we shall have something to show you in the garden, I think the roses are only waiting for you. I hope you will find your work interesting this winter. Have you seen ‘Cavalcade’? It is splendid and terrible, I cried from scene to scene. Afterwards some one who met us asked, ‘Did you enjoy it?’ If you haven’t seen the picture, I advise you to take a pocketful of handkerchiefs. Well, I must say goodbye now, the ‘Home Magazine’ is nagging me about a message for May. With our united love and every good wish for your health and satisfaction in your work, I am, / Affectionately your friend [signed in pencil] Helen Keller”. Letter includes original envelope, postmarked and addressed to Adelyn Hook. Measures 8″ x 10″. Toning and document folds, reinforced with archival tape to verso. Very good. Sold for $903.
