Harry Potter Memorabilia
Nate D. Sanders’ auction has included Harry Potter memorabilia being cover art from the Bloomsbury edition.
The book series changed children’s literature and the ensuing films have are iconic. Interesting that in Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, her second novel, she writes, “It’s our choices Harry, that show who we truly are, far more than our abilities.” Prescient.
The two separate auction items are offered coincided with the release of the national television ad campaign highlighting the opening of Universal’s highly anticipated “Wizarding World of Harry Potter — Diagon Alley.”
According to the Orlando Sentinel, “The commercials describe the expanded Wizarding World as “Bigger. Bolder. More Powerful Than Ever.”
We had some Harry Potter memorabilia on auction that might interest serious collectors at that time.
These cover illustrations are from the original publisher of the Harry Potter series, Bloomsbury. The piece originally sold for over $20,000.
At a recent auction to raise money for charity, an original Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, annotated by JK Rowling, went for 150,000 pounds. Typically, editions from the original Bloomsbury publisher are worth more, and first edition, first impression books have real collectable value.
Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets
Lot #515, This illustration is the original ink, pencil and watercolor artwork for the 1998 release of J.K. Rowling’s second book in the groundbreaking series, ”Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets.”
British artist Cliff Wright is well-known as the artist who illustrated most of the Harry Potter characters, and so his work is most associated with the characters as we know them. In this illustration, Harry, Ron and Harry’s owl, Hegewig, are featured.
The illustration is glazed, mounted and framed to an overall size of 22.5” x 19”. The two annotations along top read: ”please return Aw [artwork] to: / (undamaged)” and ”For: Harry Potter shop display / To: Rosamund Walker — Bloomsbury”.
Bloomsbury then superimposed this illustration with a background landscape also done by Wright to create the finished cover design.
The illustration is in near fine condition.
Harry Potter and The Prisoner of Azkaban
Lot # 516, This is the signed Cliff Wright ink and watercolor cover art for the original 1999 Bloomsbury edition of J.K. Rowling’s third book, ”Harry Potter and The Prisoner of Azkaban.”
This third draft ”rough” – nearing the final design – is signed by British artist Cliff Wright, who first brought many of Rowling’s concepts and characters to life for the series.
Wright’s process in creating the commissioned pieces is fascinating. He says, in part, ”…a passage from the book was suggested and I began to draw ideas working closely with the publisher. So as to retain as much vitality as possible in the final watercolour painting I only produce small-scale quick pencil/pen sketches as roughs. Time is spent on character and composition but not yet on execution, so my roughs are very simple.”
This draft is an excellent example of the characters nearly fleshed out, with detail and color nearly at the finished stage.
The illustration measures 5.5” x 5” on a standard-sized sheet of paper and is signed ”Cliff Wright” at lower right, with additional handwritten comments in margins noting, ”trainers” and ”Emma / Changes as requested. Cliff”.
This illustration is in near fine condition.
