Grateful Dead Guitar Auction
In case you weren’t aware, Garcia’s Grateful Dead is the most popular touring band of all time, with the band playing a whopping 2,317 shows during its 30 year run with Garcia at the helm. The band continued on playing shows off and on until this past summer, where they capped off a 50 year anniversary with one final weekend of performances at Soldier Field in Chicago, albeit without Garcia, who died suddenly of a heart attack in 1995.
Garcia’s go-to acoustic guitar was a Takamine, and he was particularly fond of the Takamine “lawsuit guitars”, a rare and discontinued model featuring a uniquely squared off headstock design that was discontinued due to copyright concerns from Takamine’s competitor Martin Guitars.
Garcia wrote numerous songs with this particular guitar, which he held in his possession until 1993 when drummer Mickey Hart gathered a large group of friends including Garcia at his home in Sonoma County for Hart’s 50th birthday celebration. After playing numerous songs on the guitar, notably Grateful Dead hits “Fire on The Mountain” and “Uncle John’s Band”, Garcia decided to give this guitar to Grateful Dead drummer Mickey Hart’s then 10 year-old son Taro, where it has remained in his possession until now. The solid spruce guitar features displaced and modified tuning components to the rear of the headstock, done so by Garcia himself. Garcia’s guitars are treasured, and the provenance of this one is surely unique. A fantastic inspiration from the leader of the greatest jam band of all time.
