Millions of children in 1950s America remember the jovial man who entertained them on television for 30 years, Captain Kangaroo, with his whimsical wit, his charming presence, his iconic moustache.
On the premiere episode of Captain Kangaroo, which aired on 3 October 1955, he addressed the camera with the following:
“Let me introduce myself. My name is, uh, Kangaroo… Kangaroo — Captain Kangaroo … I’m the keeper here of the Treasure House.”
Bob Keeshan, aka Captain Kangaroo, passed away in 2004, after an incredible 30+ year career.

Here’s a rundown of some noteworthy items from the Captain Kangaroo show itself:
Captain Kangaroo Iconic Costume — Including The Red Jacket — Custom Made for the Emmy-Nominated 1979 Season by John F. Kennedy’s Tailor
Bob Keeshan’s lovable Captain character was dressed almost exclusively in the red-jacketed uniform from 1971 until his hit children’s series concluded its thirty-year run in 1984. Four-piece ensemble comprises the famous red jacket, grey slacks, grey tie and pink button-up shirt.

Bob Keeshan’s hat as Captain Kangaroo at the start of the series. Keeshan’s endearing character made his debut in homes across America in 1955 dressed in this navy blue peaked cap as part of a captain’s ensemble. The cap’s Florian cross insignia suggests Keeshan’s grandfatherly character was originally conceived as a firehouse captain. The show aired with Keeshan in the navy blue suit and hat from 1955 until 1971, when he switched to a red jacket and omitted a hat from his uniform.

Captain Kangaroo’s Nautical-Inspired Pocket Jacket Costume — An Earlier Version of The Captain’s Iconic Red Jacket
This nautical-inspired black suit jacket is almost identical to the later red coat design. Prior to the red suit jacket, Captain Kangaroo wore a darker-colored coat for the first 17 seasons of the series.
And these are just a few of the Captain’s custom-made costumes we have up for auction. There are many, many more.
The Captain’s counterparts on the show are equally memorable and as part of the Keeshan estate, he also kept original costumes from other shining characters on the show.

Mr. Green Jeans Famous Green Overalls From the Show.
A regular character on the children’s show, Mr. Green Jeans wore these Sweet-Orr bib overalls in countless memorable sketches. Played by Hugh Brannum, the lovable character known for his distinctively colored apparel. Brannum played a number of characters on Captain Kangaroo from 1955 to 1984, including The Professor, Greeno The Clown, The New Old Folk Singer, and Mr. Bainter the Painter.

Dancing Bear Suit From Captain Kangaroo — Full Head & Body Costume of the Beloved Puppet
The darling character was played by its inventor, Cosmo Allegretti, save for a few years early on in the program when Don Watts inhabited the costume. Though he didn’t talk, he sure could dance —

Emmy Award for His Performance as “Captain Kangaroo”
This Emmy Award statue issued to Bob Keeshan for his groundbreaking role as “Captain Kangaroo”. Keeshan was honored by the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences for Outstanding Achievement in a Continuous Starring Role in a Sustaining Series. Keeshan produced and starred as the grandfatherly title character in his hit children’s show, which enjoyed a remarkable 30-year run. Undated award is likely his first, awarded in 1978.
Over the course of his career Keeshan would receive a total of six Emmy’s for his popular program.

As an entertainer who kept his vision succinct throughout his entire career, Keeshan puts it best,
“A child needs to be listened to and talked to at 3 and 4 and 5 years of age,” he once said. “Parents should not wait for the sophisticated conversation of a teenager.”
He sure did know his audience.
