Golden Globe Auction
The Golden Globe was established in 1943 by a new group of writers who joined together to create an organization called the “Hollywood Foreign Press”. Who knew that such an idea would be the seed of what is widely considered to be one of the most prestigious awards in the entertainment business. The first Golden Globe award ceremony featured awards presented in the odd form of scrolls, so they were certainly smart to replace that rather unceremonial type of award with the beautiful recreation of a golden ball mounted to a pedestal which we see today. 1955 saw the Hollywood Foreign Press approve the addition of television awards to the award ceremony, which was originally held at 20th Century Fox studios before moving to the elegant ballroom of the Beverly Hilton in Beverly Hills in 1961, where it is still held today. Rosalind Russell’s Golden Globe, Won for “A Majority of One” in 1961: Sold for $40,954
Russell was one of Hollywood’s best Actresses of her generation, and had a long career spanning from the mid 1930s to the early 1960s. Known for playing character roles, she was nominated for the Academy Award four times but never won. She had quite a run in the late 1950s and early 1960s, where she won three Golden Globes in four years from the period of 1958 to 1962. This is her award from the March 5, 1962 ceremony, won for her bravura performance in the 1961 film “A Majority of One”.
The Golden Globe is always the precursor to the Oscars, in that it is widely speculated that whoever gets nominated or wins the Golden Globe will win or get nominated for the Oscar. That was exactly what happened to British actor John Mills, who won both the Golden Globe and the Oscar for his performance in David Lean’s 1970 film “Ryan’s Daughter”. We were proud to auction off his Golden Globe won for that brilliant performance, which sold for $40,954:
We also auctioned off a Golden Globe from another Hollywood screen legend, Barbara Stanwyck’s Golden Globe won for her performance in the television series “The Thorn Birds” in 1984. Like Russell, Stanwyck had bad luck at the Academy Awards; she was nominated for the Academy Award four times, but never won. Her first Golden Globe (she was awarded the Cecil B. Demille Honorary Golden Globe two years after winning this award, in 1986) sold for $30,768:
