A George Taylor is an autograph that is one of the rarest of the Declaration of Independence signers. Declaration of Independence Signer George Taylor Autograph Document Signed 1773 — Excellent Rare, Early Signature of Pennsylvania Patriot and Member of Continental Congress
George Taylor autograph document signed of the Pennsylvania patriot and signer of the Declaration of Independence, dated 1 June 1773. Taylor, who had emigrated from England was intimately involved in the cause of liberty as a Pennsylvania militiaman and supplier of cannon shot for the Continental Army, and in July 1776, became a Pennsylvania representative to the Second Continental Congress. Here Taylor, as Justice of the Peace for Northampton County, Pennsylvania, ratifies an employment agreement in which Gertruth Rue binds herself as a servant to Henry Best as a servant for nine years and seven months. Best agrees to provide Rue clothing, housing and her choice of either eight pounds or a cow. Signed clearly and boldly: “…Sealed and Delivered / In the Presence of / Geo. Taylor.” Measures 9″ x 11″. Single page letter has been trimmed at top with some loss of text and is laid down to second sheet. Separations at folds and expected foxing and toning not affecting signature which stands out clearly at bottom of the document. Overall very good condition. One of the rarest and increasingly difficult Declaration Signers to obtain. Sold for $19,036.
