George McManus Original Art Color Drawing
George McManus (January 23, 1884 – October 22, 1954) was an American cartoonist best known as the creator of Irish immigrant Jiggs and his wife Maggie, the main characters of his syndicated comic strip, Bringing Up Father.
George McManus drawing featuring his “Bringing Up Father” characters. The popular comic strip ran for 87 years, highlighting the hilarious conflicts between Maggie and Jiggs, an Irish-American couple who came into money to the wife’s delight and the henpecked husband’s chagrin. In this color drawing, Jiggs perches on the brim of a society lady’s hat, while Maggie sneaks up behind him, poised to clobber him with her rolling pin. McManus signs and dedicates the lower left, dating it 1947, seven years before his death. Measures 5.5″ x 8.5″. Mounted to blue paper to an overall size of 6.5″ x 9.5″. Toning, else near fine. Sold for $1,045.
