Franz Liszt Autograph Letter Signed Mentioning Lieder
Franz Liszt (German: [ˈlɪst]; Hungarian: Liszt Ferencz, in modern usage Liszt Ferenc [ˈlist ˈfɛrɛnt͡s]; 22 October 1811 – 31 July 1886) was a Hungarian composer, virtuoso pianist, conductor, music teacher, arranger, and organist of the Romantic era. He was also a writer, philanthropist, Hungarian nationalist, and Franciscan tertiary. A prolific composer, Liszt was one of the most prominent representatives of the New German School (German: Neudeutsche Schule). He left behind an extensive and diverse body of work that influenced his forward-looking contemporaries and anticipated 20th-century ideas and trends. Among Liszt’s musical contributions were the symphonic poem, developing thematic transformation as part of his experiments in musical form, and radical innovations in harmony.
Franz Liszt autograph letter signed, in which the composer and conductor mentions his famous “Lieder” musical works. Undated letter in French to an unnamed recipient translates in full, “In the interests of rest and approval from others, I generally advise them very explicitly not to take an interest in my music; but since you are assuring me that my Lieder will contribute to your peace and that your young prima donna will find them pleasant, I am sending them to you without any further scruples, with my most cordial regards. / F. Liszt”. Letter on bifolium Canson stationery measures 4″ x 5.25″ as folded. Uniform toning, and chips on verso from previous mount, else near fine condition. Sold for $1,181.
