Duke of Windsor Photo From Sotheby’s 1997 Auction
Edward VIII (Edward Albert Christian George Andrew Patrick David; 23 June 1894 – 28 May 1972) was King of the United Kingdom and the Dominions of the British Empire and Emperor of India from 20 January 1936 until his abdication in December of the same year. Duke of Windsor was a title in the Peerage of the United Kingdom. It was created on 8 March 1937, for former King Edward VIII, following his abdication on 11 December 1936. The dukedom takes its name from the town where Windsor Castle, a residence of English monarchs since the time of Henry I, following the Norman Conquest, is situated. Windsor has been the house name of the royal family since 1917.
Vintage photo of the Duke of Windsor, Edward VIII. Portrait of the Royal in a kilt and regalia was taken by celebrity photographer Frank Turgeon, who signs the mat in pencil. His blind stamp is present to lower left corner of the photo. Matted and framed to an overall size of 15.75″ x 19.25″. Some discoloration to the mat at lower right. Photo has not been removed from the frame for further inspection but appears near fine. Provenance from Sotheby’s September 11-19 1997 Duke & Duchess of Windsor auction and with Sotheby’s tags. Sold for $1,760.
