Francis Scott Key 1792 Rare Book Signed
Rare book signed by Francis Scott Key, “Reports of Sir George Croke, Knight,” Dublin: 1792. Calf-bound law book with gilt lettering to spine, boldly signed “F.S. Key” on title page. Book also bears Key’s bookplate on the front pastedown “F.S. Key / Georgetown-Columbia” and signed “F.S. Key” upon the spine. Cracks to leather, though binding remains intact and tight. Very good condition. Sold for $2,500.
Francis Scott Key autograph document signed, defending a slave named ”Negro Tom” from barbaric and tortuous treatment by his owner. Well known as the author of America’s national anthem, ”The Star-Spangled Banner”, Key was also an influential lawyer in his day who performed pro bono work defending slaves, especially those who had been abused. Dated 3 August 1803, Key writes in part, ”The petition of Negro Tom humbly showeth that…he daily receives from his master the said Dietric the most inhuman treatment, that on very frequent occasions he has been beaten by the said Dietric with the most excessive violence, & has at other times suffered most cruelly by being chained, tied and in other ways barbarously treated…He therefore humbly prays that your honors will take his unfortunately condition into your consideration & take such measures to prevent any repetition of his injuries as the law directs…F. S. Key / for Pet’r”. Single page measures 8.25” x 13.25”, with docketing and witnesses for the petitioner listed on verso. Beautifully housed in a custom clamshell case with quarter leather boards and spine tooled in gilt. Case measures 9” x 13.75”. Some chipping and toning to letter, and smudging to signature, overall very good condition. Case is near fine. With transcription. Sold for $1,773.
Francis Scott Key Autograph Letter Signed — Dated November 1814, a Month After Publishing “The Star-Spangled Banner”
Autograph letter signed by Francis Scott Key, the author of America’s national anthem, “The Star-Spangled Banner.” Dated 7 November 1814, approximately one month after his famous poem was published in the “Patriot.” Letter concerns Key’s legal work and instructs the recipient, “Beale” to countermand a writ that Key had ordered. Signed “F.Key / Nov. 7th 1814.” Letter is in good condition with toning, especially along folds which are starting to separate. Measures 7.75″ x 9.25″, housed in a frame measuring 22.5″ x 15″. Sold for $1,074.
Sabine Baring-Gould Autograph Lyrics Signed to His Iconic Hymn, “Onward, Christian Soldiers”
Autograph lyrics signed for “Onward, Christian Soldiers” by Sabine Baring-Gould, who wrote the perennially popular hymn in 1865, reportedly in a burst of creativity that took only 15 minutes. The hymn has since been sung at such important events as the Atlantic Charter in 1941, by The Salvation Army as its preferred processional, and often in Civil Rights protest. Single page measures 6.5″ x 11.75″, comprised of five 8-line stanzas, boldly signed at the conclusion “S. Baring-Gould”. Folds, uniform toning, and expert restoration to verso, overall very good plus condition. Sold for $2,000.
Kurt Weill autograph manuscript quotation signed to Mary MacArthur, daughter of actress Helen Hayes. Weill, composer of ”The Threepenny Opera”, draws the manuscript quotation with lyrics to his ”Song of the Free.” It reads ”We were born free men, we’ll be free until we die, there’ll be none to tell us when, there’ll be none to tell us why.” The inscription reads ”Dear Mary, I just wrote this song to Archibald [MacLeish] / Macleish’s mom, – and I hope it will be your / wedding march! Kurt Weill”. Above this AMQS by Weill, the American painter John Steuart Curry draws a sunburst and pastoral scene in black ink. He writes, ”For Mary MacArthur / My verses make things worses / JC”. Piece is done on a blank book page measuring 7” x 8.25”. Near fine. Sold for $1,562.
Samuel Francis Smith Signed, Handwritten Stanza of His Poem “America”
Handwritten and signed copy of the first stanza of Samuel Francis Smith’s poem “America,” on a 4.75″ x 3″ card, which he also dates 1884. Accompanied by the original mailing envelope, addressed in Smith’s hand, and by a separate postcard to the original recipient of the quote, Mr. W.P. Hopkins, in which Smith notes, “1832 is the date of the writing of ‘My country.’ The date of my birth is Oct. 21, 1808. S.F.S.” Postcard is dated 16 January 1885. Mailing envelope shows some light foxing; other two pieces are in very fine condition. Sold for $1,430.
