Abraham Lincoln Signed CDV as President — John Hay Certifies Signature as Authentic on Verso
Exceptionally rare Abraham Lincoln signed carte-de-visite photograph, taken by Alexander Gardner in 1861 and signed as President. Signed ”A. Lincoln” below the seated portrait of Lincoln. John Hay, Lincoln’s private secretary, authenticates the signature upon the verso by writing, ”I certify that the President’s signature is genuine / John Hay”. With ”Brady’s National Portrait Gallery” backstamp. Measures 2.5” x 3.75”. Very good with some foxing and wear, but with a strong signature by Lincoln. With provenance from Profiles in History and with a COA from Charles Hamilton. Sold for $49,913.
Civil War-dated handwritten letter serving as an official notice of General Lee’s resignation, and ultimately the end of the war, dated 9 April 1865. Sent by telegraph from the ”Head Quarters Armies of the U.S.”, letter is addressed to Confederate General Cadmus Wilcox from Confederate General William Loring and is signed by an aide to Loring. Letter reads in full: ”Genl. Willcox — The following received Head Quarters Armies U.S. Appomattox C.H. April 9th, 1865 — Genl Lee this afternoon surrendered his entire army to Lieut. Genl. Grant; officers and privates to retain private horses, arms and baggage; officers and men to be permitted to return to their homes, but not be disturbed by the U.S. authorities as long as they observe the laws where they reside; all public property to be turned over to Ordinance and Quartermasters Departments. Remnant of Lee’s Army surrendered is about 30,000. – April 10, surrender is complete this morning; munitions of war turned over to the U.S. and Genl. Grant leaves for City Point at eleven o’clk this morning. The Army of Northern Virginia is no more!!! (sgd) Schemerhorn”. Card-style 2pp. letter has handwriting on pages 1 and 3. Some toning, foxing and two 1” tears along a horizontal fold. Very good condition overall. Scarce. Sold for $10,780.

George Custer Rare Signed CDV Photo with Brady Backstamp
Very rare George A. Custer signed CDV photo as Brigadier General, with the backstamp of Mathew Brady who took the photo on 8 October 1863 (K-20 in the catalog of Custer photos). Custer signs under his image, “Truly Yours / G.A. Custer”. Accompanied by a CDV of Custer’s wife, Elizabeth Bacon Custer, with backstamp of photographer W.H. Bowlsby, Monroe, Michigan. CDVs originate from the family of Jessica Wood Cust, neighbors of the Custers in Monroe. Notation on verso of Mrs. Custer’s photo indicates that General Custer taught a member of the Cust family how to ride horseback. CDVs each measure 2.375″ x 4″. Writing on versos and minute wear, overall in very good plus condition with a prominent signature by Custer. With provenance from Cowan’s Auctions, where the set sold for $23,000 in 2005. Sold for $8,400.
Robert E. Lee Signed CDV Photo — In Military Uniform With Three Confederate Stars on His Lapel
Commander of the Confederate Army during the Civil War, Robert E. Lee signed CDV photo, ”RE Lee”. In this photo taken by Richmond photographer J.W. Davies (famously referred to as the ”floppy tie” photograph), Lee wears his Confederate uniform featuring only three stars, signifying his rank of Colonel before the Civil War. During the war, Lee refused to wear a General’s insignia, preferring to wait until the South won the war and he could properly be promoted to General in the Confederate Army. CDV measures 2.75” x 4”. Handwritten notation and two-cent stamp to verso. Slightly trimmed along lower edge, only affecting mount. Light toning and wear, overall in very good condition with a bold signature. Sold for $5,625.

Andrew Johnson CDV Signed
Extremely rare Andrew Johnson signed CDV. Backmark reads, “Whitehurst Gallery, 434 Pennsylvania Avenue, Washington, D.C.; M.J. Powers, Photographer.” CDV measures 2.5″ x 4″ and is in very good condition. Sold for $4,440.
Historically important letter signed by Confederate General Gustave Beauregard, who writes to Confederate President Jefferson Davis on 21 May 1864, the very next day after securing the Howlett Line in the last battle of the Bermuda Hundred Campaign. Beauregard seeks to capitalize on his victory and strategizes here on how to secure the James River in order to prevent the Union forces from moving forward. Sent from ”Hancock’s House” at ”Headquarters near Chester, Va”, Beauregard writes, ”…I shall do all in my power, with my limited means, to hold in check the Enemy in my front, who has nearly double my present force, and, if possible, I will compel him to evacuate his present strong position. I succeeded yesterday, after a severe struggle, in obtaining the shortest defensive [Howlett] line in front of his works, which extend from the James River to the Appomattox. This line is about three miles long, and when properly fortified, will enable me, with a small force, (say about 10,000 men) to hold in check, and neutralize the force of at least 25,000 men, which the Enemy is now reported to have on the Peninsula of Bermuda Hundreds. To drive him from his present position, the best plan would then be to send a force of about 4 or 5,000 men to storm Fort Powhatan, and establish there a Battery of heavy guns to command the navigation of the James River at that point – this could be accomplished in a very few days; then, by putting into the River torpedoes and a rope obstruction, under the protection of the guns of the Fort, no Enemy’s repels could pass up or down the River, and he would be compelled to abandon his present position. With regards to reinforcing Gen’l Lee, I shall be most happy to do so, whenever you shall judge proper to order it. The prisoners taken yesterday report no part of Butler’s forces as having been yet sent to reinforce Gen’l Grant – they state on the contrary, that a Brigade of 5 or 6,000 men was received day before yesterday by Gen’l Butler – this is rather doubtful in my opinion; Gen’l Gilmore may have received a few Regiments or parts of Regiments from his former Department – but nothing more. I have ordered a close watch to be kept along the James River…of any reinforcements [Butler] may send to Gen’l Grant. I enclose herewith an approximate statement of the effective forces I now have in front of the Enemy…Infantry – 13,000 / Artillery – 850 / Cavalry – 680 / Total – 14,530…[signed] G.T.
