We Sold a King Edward VIII Autograph at Auction
Edward VIII is famous for one of the shortest reigns in British history, having spent only 326 days as king in 1936. He was abdicated in 1937 to marry Wallis Simpson as the Church of England did not allow divorcees to remarry if their former spouses were still living. Edward’s brother, George VI, took the throne and Edward became Duke of Windsor. In 1940 Edward was appointed as Governor of Bahamas upon reveal that he was a Nazi sympathizer.

Exceptional Signed Photo of Edward VIII, Prince of Wales — in Original Royal Frame
Very elegant and atmospheric photo of Edward VIII, taken by noted photographer Hugh Cecil. In this three-quarter pose, the future King, who would abdicate his throne to marry Wallis Simpson, looks thoughtfully off-camera. Signed at the bottom “Edward P / 1927.” Matte photograph measures 5.5″ x 8″, printed on cardstock with a Hugh Cecil label to its verso. Presented in the original black leather Royal frame, which measures 6.75″ x 10.25″. Both photo and frame are in very good to near fine condition with light silvering and wear. Sold for $1,693.
Edward VIII and Wallis Simpson Signed ”The Windsor Years / The Life of Edward”
King Edward VIII signed first edition of ”The Windsor Years” by Lord Kinross. William Collins Sons & Co.: London: 1967. He inscribes the fly-leaf for a Pulitzer Prize winning journalist, ”To Joe and Eileen Kingsbury Smith / Edward / Duke of Windsor”. Beneath, Wallis Simpson signs ”Wallis / Duchess of Windsor”. Photos spanning the century fill this 303pp. profile of the reluctant King. Bound in red cloth boards with gilt design. Measures 10” x 13”. Tape marks to endpapers, else fine. Chipping and sunning to dustjacket spine, else near fine. Sold for $1,008.
Prince Edward VIII Signed Christmas Card From 1927
Christmas card signed by Prince Edward VIII as Prince of Wales in 1927. Addressed to a Mr. and Mrs. Chilton, card features a photograph of the Prince in a Welsh guard uniform as he sits atop his horse. With a small blue ribbon affixed near the spine, as well as a stamp of the Prince of Wales’ royal cipher. Card reads: ”Mr. & Mrs. Chilton / With Best Wishes For Christmas & New Year, 1927-28”. The Prince signs ”Edward P” in ink underneath his photograph. Measures 4” x 5.5”. Light toning, else near fine. Sold for $938.
King Edward VIII Signed 8” x 10” Photo
King Edward VIII photo signed, ”Edward / 1940”. Photograph shows Edward wearing a wedding band and reading from a sheet before a microphone. Glossy photo measures 8” x 10”. Creasing to corners and a faint paperclip imprint to the top edge, else near fine. Sold for $625.
King Edward VIII Signed Copy of His Abdication Speech
Signed copy of King Edward VIII’s abdication speech, framed with a photograph of the momentary King. Read worldwide via radio on 11 December 1936, speech reads in part, ”…I lay down my burden. It may be some time before I return to my native land; but I shall always follow the fortunes of the British race and Empire with profound interest…God bless you all. God save the King!” Boldly signed ”Edward / Duke of Windsor” in black ink. Speech measures 6.75” square, matted and framed to 13.5” x 18.75”. Very good. Sold for $625.
