Though Disney stopped using their celluloid process to animate their films in 1990 with the advent of computer design technology, Disney cels serve as a reminder of a pioneering new form of film presentation that is forever synonymous with Walt Disney.

It saved a lot of money, as the characters are drawn on cels and laid over a static background drawing, reducing the number of times an image has to be redrawn.
