Rare First Edition of Sir Isaac Newton’s ”The Mathematical Principles of Natural Philosophy” — Two Volume Set From 1729

First edition of Sir Isaac Newton’s ”The Mathematical Principles of Natural Philosophy” in two volumes. London: Benjamin Motte, 1729. One of the most important works by the leading mind of the 18th century scientific revolution. Bound in contemporary tree calf, sympathetically rebacked, with gilt tooling to spines. Two octavo volumes measure 5.5” x 8.5” each. Volumes contain two folding letterpress tables and 47 folding engraved plates; the two frontispieces and pp. 385-393 and first 7pp. of index are replaced in facsimile, but hardly distinguishable from the original. The ”Laws of Moon’s Motion” usually found in Vol. II are here bound at end of Vol. I, and with errata for both volumes on verso of E4. Small stain to inner part of title in Vol. I, short tear to lower margin of G1, small section missing from lower margin of M3 and with lower corner cut away of A8 and C4 of ”Laws of Moon’s Motion” (no loss of text). Some marginal dampstaining and occasional soiling and spotting, overall in very good, clean condition with most edges untrimmed. Sold for $22,500.

Extremely Rare Original ”Journals of Congress, Volume II” With the Declaration of Independence Printed Within — Covering 1776 Continental Congress Sessions

The activities of the Continental Congress for the watershed year of 1776 are recorded comprehensively here in this first edition, first printing of ”Journals of Congress Containing The Proceedings In The Year, 1776.” Published by Order of Congress, by Robert Aitken: Philadelphia: 1777. This is one of just 532 copies which were printed in 1776, with substantially less than that available today, and is complete with the original printing of the Declaration of Independence on pages 241-246. According to text upon the title page, these records of the nation’s fledgling government were taken directly from the minutes of the Continental Congress. In addition to the Declaration of Independence, this volume chronicles the preparation for the Revolutionary War, as well as Richard Henry Lee’s 15 May proposal of independence. The book reads as a diary, with each day’s activities noted, including letters from ”General Washington” and resolutions such as one from 14 August 1776, in part, ”…his British majesty, in order to destroy our freedom and happiness has commenced against us a cruel and unprovoked war; and unable to engage Briton’s sufficient to execute his sanguinary measures has applied for aid to foreign princes, who are in the habit of selling the blood of their people for money…” Volume runs 512pp. plus index and measures 5.5” x 8.5”. Deckled-edge leaves are bound in paper boards, not original calf binding. Loss of backstrip reveals a thin layer of fabric affixed over a ribbed spine. Title page is missing the top 1.5”. Chipping to bottom edge of front board and a stamp of the previous owner on the front pastedown. In very good condition considering age. A precious record codifying the founding of the United States of America. Sold for $6,083.

A record of the proceedings of the Congress for the year 1776 including a complete text of the Declaration of Independence with all of the signers’ names in type. Scarce second Dunlap printing, printed in York-Town after the evacuation of Philadelphia by Congress due to British occupation of the city. 520pp. plus index. Bound in quarter calf leather with gilt titling to backstrip. Some bumping to corners. Light to heavy foxing throughout, mostly to upper margins. Ink inscription to side cover and top of title page. One of the scarcest book printings of The Declaration of Independence in very good condition. Sold for $5,012.

Francis Pope Autograph Copy of His First Encyclical, ”Lumen Fidei” (The Light of Faith) — With LOA From Vatican Secretary of State, Cardinal Pietro Parolin

Beautiful Papal copy of ”Lumen Fidei”, signed by its author, Pope Francis. Published by the Vatican Press in 2013, it is the first encyclical of Pope Francis’ papacy. In ”Lumen Fidei”, Pope Francis finishes the encyclical started by his predecessor Pope Benedict, who began writing on the history and nature of faith, including the mutually inclusive notions of faith and reason, and the importance of faith in building a moral society. Pope Francis writes in the encyclical, ”…A light this powerful cannot come from ourselves but from a more primordial source: in a word, it must come from God. Faith is born of an encounter with the living God who calls us and reveals his love, a love which precedes us and upon which we can lean for security and for building our lives. Transformed by this love, we gain fresh vision, new eyes to see; we realize that it contains a great promise of fulfillment, and that a vision of the future opens up before us…” Pope Francis signs the title page, ”Francisco” above the embossed stamp of the Pope’s personal secretary.
