One of the greatest pieces of artwork by Hal Foster in his career, the original artwork for the 120th ”Prince Valiant” Sunday comic strip from 28 May 1939. In this instantly recognizable piece — featured on the cover of Fantagraphics’ ”Prince Valiant Vol. 2: 1939-1940” and in numerous ”Prince Valiant” publications — Val sees the foreboding castle of Andelkrag in person, surrounded by Huns as they prepare to attack it. The six panel strip measures 26” x 34.5”, (the large Andelkrag panel measures 17” x 21” by itself), with incredible detail showing the seemingly impregnable fortress, the mountains behind it, the flames roiling up aside it and Prince Valiant standing upon a hillside, gazing at its beauty and enormity. In this strip, Val makes his approach and plunges into the river moat at darkness, to find a fire-raft built by the Huns in order to destroy Andelkrag’s bridge. As Prince Valiant destroys their handiwork, the Huns vow revenge in return. Artwork is signed by Foster on the second panel, inscribed to ”Edward W. Larson / with friendly greetings / Hal Foster”. With King Features Syndicate, Inc. label on fifth panel, with 1939 copyright. The date of 28 May 1939 appears on the fourth panel, along with ”120”, the number of this Prince Valiant strip in the life of the series. Artwork is mounted to board and matted to a size of 33” x 41.5”, with matting strips separating the panels. With minute amount of soiling, artwork is in near fine condition. Accompanied by the color newsprint of this artwork and two ”Prince Valiant” books featuring this strip. Sold for $70,461.
Artist Dean Ellis original ”Red Illustrated Man” painting commissioned for the cover art of Ray Bradbury’s ”The Illustrated Man”. Ellis’ depiction was used for the cover of the Bantam Books 1969 paperback edition of ”The Illustrated Man”. Composed in casein on illustration board. Painting measures 17” x 26.5” and is framed to an overall size of 26” x 35”. Near fine condition. With a COA from the Ray Bradbury estate. Sold for $45,894.

”Prince Valiant” Comic Strip by Hal Foster From 5 October 1941
Original “Prince Valiant in the Days of King Arthur” strip in two parts, dated 5 October 1941. In this chapter, we witness the wizard Belsatan cast a powerful spell for the return of his wife and its dramatic aftermath (which is “beyond description!”). In earlier action, Belsatan had concocted a scheme to use Val to get rid of his beautiful, but nagging wife, Acidia. The schemed worked, but the wizard soon grew lonely, leading to the action featured in this strip, a fantastic example by Hal Foster, the strip’s creator, working at the absolute top of his game. Foster inscribes the strip to his “favorite comic artist ‘Chick’ Young”. Hand-drawn strip measures 29″ x 15″ and 29″ x 22″. Both parts of the strip are mounted, with very light toning, overall very good to near fine. From the estate of “Blondie” creator, Chic Young. Sold for $27,981.
”Addams Family” cartoonist and creator Charles Addams original 1946 painting personally owned by Ray Bradbury. True to Addams’ whimsical and macabre tone, painting depicts a landscape scene at twilight with a Gothic mansion overlooking a shore, and with ghoulish creatures and spirits ascending towards the house. Signed, ”Chas Adams” at upper right. Mixed media on illustration board was selected to be the cover image for Bradbury’s book, ”From the Dust Returned”, which was released in 2001. Painting measures 17” x 12” and is matted and framed to an overall size of 24” x 19”. Art by Joseph Mugnaini from the personal collection of Ray Bradbury, and indeed the painting which began the collaboration between the two creative men. Painting known as both ”Carnival” and “Caravan” is a nighttime scene depicting a train perched precariously high, filled with faceless figures, their arms raised in apparent cheering, waving pennant-style flags. The carnival theme is inextricable from Bradbury’s work, serving not only as the setting of his famous novel, ”Something Wicked This Way Comes”, but also as his inspiration to become a writer; Bradbury credits his interaction as a child with a carnival magician named ”Mr. Electrico”, who told him to ”Live Forever!”, as the impetus for his writing career. Painting, composed in oil on board, is circa 1952. Measures approximately 31” x 25”, matted and framed to an overall size of 36” x 30”. Frame shows wear but art appears near fine. Ultra-Rare Original 1946 Gilda Movie Poster Featuring Rita Hayworth in Her Landmark Role
Original Columbia Pictures 1946 Gilda movie poster starring Rita Hayworth in her best-known performance as Hollywood’s ultimate femme fatale. Directed by Charles Vidor, “Gilda” was released just after the end of WWII and was lauded for its mixture of genres and rather modern approach to character interaction. The poster features the iconic Hayworth in a debonair pose holding a cigarette with a headline reading in part: “There NEVER was a woman like Gilda! / Columbia Pictures presents / Rita Hayworth as Gilda with Glenn Ford…” Poster by Morgan Litho Co. measures 27″ x 41″ and has folds throughout, with a long vertical scratch and small tear down the front of her dress, reinforced with a piece of brown tape on the back of poster. Some light tan stains and pinholes on and near the borders. Very good condition overall with still vibrant colors. Very scarce. Sold for $25,000.
Alberto Vargas Art — An Original “Vargas Girl” Watercolor Painting — 18″ x 37.25″ — Painting Is From March 1948 Varga Pin-Up Calendar
Original “Vargas Girl” watercolor on board, Alberto Vargas art, which appeared as the March 1948 calendar pin-up girl in Esquire Magazine. Next to her portrait, Esquire quotes her as saying, “My boy friend often tells me / That our love is indestructible; Although I’m his biggest asset / It’s too bad I’m not deductible.” This watercolor is a beautiful example of Vargas’ aesthetic, whose pin-up girls became wildly popular during WWII and defined the genre of pin-up art collected today. During the 1940’s and 50’s, Vargas was considered an authority on the female form, and renowned for his airbrush techniques. He signs “Vargas” to the lower left of the 18″ x 37.25″ watercolor. Scattered light foxing and pin-holes to right edge at center, else near fine. Framed to an overall size of 28.25″ x 38.5″. Lot also includes an original 8.5″ x 12″ lithograph of the Varga Girl March 1948 calendar, published by Vargas Enterprises Inc. Sold for $13,650.

First issue of ”Playboy” magazine, December 1953, Volume I, Number I. Landmark issue of Hugh Hefner’s pioneering and controversial men’s magazine, featuring the famous color centerfold of Playboy’s first ”Sweetheart of the Month,” Marilyn Monroe. ”First Time in any magazine / Full Color / the famous Marilyn Monroe Nude” appears on front cover. 42pp. magazine measures 8.5” x 11”. Separation of covers from interior pages. Covers have creasing and wear, more heavy on back cover. Interior pages and nice and tightly bound. Overall in very good condition. Sold for $2,167.

Black and white pencil and ink illustration drawn by comic book artist Bill Ward for the “Sextra Laughs” comic book series. The illustration depicts a Fuller brush salesman greeting a shapely woman, comically introducing himself as the “Fuller bust man”. Ward’s signature appears at bottom right. Known as the founder of the “Torchy Todd” series, Ward specialized in risque drawings of women who were usually confronted by male onlookers. Illustration measures 8.25″ x 11.25″, taped to a cardboard backboard measuring 9.75″ x 11.5″. Slight creasing to bottom right corner, else near fine. Sold for $990.
