Nate D. Sanders Auctions Sells Cornelius Vanderbilt Autograph
Cornelius Vanderbilt is a self-made railroad tycoon and businessman who began his life in 1794 to a poverty-stricken family in Staten Island, New York. Vanderbilt had limited formal education and quit school at age 11 to work on the waterfront. His entrepreneur spirit was evident at a young age, as he purchased his first boat in 1810 with money he borrowed from his parents. The boat was used to ferry passengers between Staten Island and New York City. The ferry operation soon turned into a shipping industry to transport people and goods to other parts of the country. Railroads became Vanderbilt’s main focus by the 1950s and was the first to provide a rail service between Chicago and New York. Vanderbilt was also known as a philanthropist and later in his life donated $1 million to Central University, now known as Vanderbilt University.
