Sell Your Commercial Intercourse Between the US and France Document

We Nate D. Sanders Auctions sold a broadside from 1800, during the presidency of John Adams and vice presidency of Thomas Jefferson, for $1,750. Please see details below:

Thomas Jefferson Broadside 1800

Printed broadside, dated 27 February 1800, on 3pp. of folio sheets. “…Thomas Jefferson and John Adams, an Act to further suspend the Commercial Intercourse between the U.S. and France, and the dependencies thereof…” Tensions with the newly formed United States and France began on 20 November 1798 when a French warship, off the French colony island of Guadeloupe, captured an American schooner. In early 1799, Captain Thomas Trexton of the U.S.S. Constellation retaliated by capturing a French ship and the U.S. imposed an act to suspend trade between the United States and France: “Act Further to Suspend the Commercial Intercourse Between the United States and France, and the Dependencies Thereof.” In 1800, Trexton again dueled with French ships and again, a trade embargo was imposed by the U.S. This crisis led to what became known as the Quasi-War with France, which nearly escalated into a full-scale conflict between the former allies. Print has minor browning and some paper loss, overall in good condition. Extremely scarce original broadside. Sold for $1,750.

1775 Revolutionary War Broadside — With Enlistment Instructions From Horatio Gates to Officers of the Massachusetts Bay Forces

Broadside announces the recruitment of soldiers for the American Revolutionary War. The document, dated 1775 and signed in type by Horatio Gates as Adjutant General reads in full: ”Instructions for the Officers of the several Regiments of the Massachusetts Bay Forces, who are immediately to go upon the Recruiting Services. You are not to Enlist any Deserter from the Ministerial Army, nor any Stroller, Negro or Vagabond, or Person suspected of being an enemy to the Liberty of America, nor any under Eighteen Years of Age. As the cause is the best that can engage Men of Courage and Principle to take up Arms; so it is expected that non but such will be accepted by the Recruiting Officer: The Pay, Provision, etc. being so ample, it is not doubted but the Officers sent upon this Service will without Delay compleat their respective Corps, and March the Men forthwith to Camp. You are not to enlist any Person who is not American-born, unless such Person has a wife and Family, and is a settled Resident in this Country. The Persons you Enlist must be provided with good and compleat Arms. Given at the Head Quarters at Cambridge, this 10th Day of July, 1775. / Horatio Gates, Adjutant General”. 1865 Period Broadside of the Emancipation Proclamation

A rare, original broadside of Abraham Lincoln surrounded by the complete text of the Emancipation Proclamation. Done by artist Gilman R. Russell, broadside was printed in 1865 by Philadelphia lithographer P.S. Duvall & Son Ltd. Citizens of the newly re-United States displayed commemorative prints of the celebrated Emancipation Proclamation in their homes, especially as one might imagine, in the northern states. The Proclamation was an executive order issued by Lincoln on 1 January 1863 that freed more than three-quarters of the nation’s slaves. By July of the year this piece was crafted, almost all of those enslaved had been liberated. Framed to an overall size of 24” x 30.75”. Toning and somewhat heavy dampstaining; overall in good condition. Frame may be original to the 1860’s as well. A proud tribute to Lincoln and the order that earned him the sobriquet: The Great Emancipator. Sold for $938.
