Rutherford Birchard Hayes (October 4, 1822 – January 17, 1893) was the 19th president of the United States from 1877 to 1881, after serving in the U.S. House of Representatives and as governor of Ohio. A lawyer and staunch abolitionist, he had defended refugee slaves in court proceedings during the antebellum years.

Rutherford B. Hayes signs ”R.B. Hayes” in black ink to the border of his cabinet photo portrait, in which he appears in profile. The year 1886 is also written, likely by Hayes. Matted and framed to an overall size of 7.5” x 10.25”. Creasing and a small stain on his shoulder. In very good condition. Sold for $1,420.

President Rutherford B. Hayes large 15″ x 20.5″ signed photograph, posing alongside his wife, First Lady Lucy Webb Hayes. Rutherford signs beneath his image, “With the best wishes R.B. Hayes”. Hayes won one of the most hotly contested Presidential elections in history, resulting in the “Compromise of 1877,” an agreement that ended the military occupation of the South. Matte photo measures 15″ x 20.5″. Light dampstaining and creasing along border, and part of ink inscription removed. Very good condition. Sold for $1,109.

Matted and framed to an overall size of 14.25” x 21.5”. Wear to right edge of image and abrasions to frame, else near fine. Sold for $968.

Rutherford B. Hayes check signed and made out in his hand to ”J.B. Thayer on order” in the amount of $50. Check is drawn on a Fremont, Ohio bank where Hayes lived post-presidency when this check was written on 9 November 1882. Check measures 8.25” x 3.25”, framed in wood burl with a large photo of Hayes to an overall size of 15.25” x 22”. Discreet cancellation cut and folds, otherwise near fine. Sold for $625.
