Very personal and largely unpublished photos of the most important world leaders in the WWII era, including Presidents Franklin D. Roosevelt and Harry Truman, plus Winston Churchill, Joseph Stalin, Dwight Eisenhower as General, Eleanor Roosevelt and others. Collection comprises over 1,000 photos from the personal collection of William Rigdon, who served as White House and travel aide to FDR and Truman, accompanying the men on both personal and official trips, including the 1945 Potsdam Conference. Photos include FDR receiving a military briefing with Douglas MacArthur in front of a large map; Truman fishing and swimming post-war at his Key West home; Winston Churchill with cigar in hand; Eleanor Roosevelt with their dog Fala; Prime Minister Anthony Eden in Quebec; FDR, MacArthur and Admiral Nimitz eating pineapple, and many more.
Of the more than 1,000 photos, Truman appears in 594, FDR in 73, Churchill in 48, Eleanor Roosevelt in 3 and Joseph Stalin in approximately 7. There is also one of Chiang Kai-shek, 1 of Haile Selassie, 1 of Dwight Eisenhower, and several of Anthony Eden, Douglas MacArthur and Chester Nimitz.
Over 700 photos measure 8” x 10”, with approximately 300 measuring 5” x 4”, and other sizes in the minority. Photos show a variety of credits on verso, some from the Army Signal Corps, Navy Department, Bureau of Aeronautics, and others with no date stamp or credit, likely taken by Rigdon himself. Light wear and curling to most of the photos, overall very good condition. Sold for $5,000.



Important Winston Churchill typed letter signed as Prime Minister, announcing his resignation from that office, dated 6 April 1955. After suffering a severe stroke in 1953, Churchill’s health quickly began to deteriorate affecting both his speech and ability to walk. Written on official 10 Downing Street stationery, letter to Conservative politician John Harvey reads in part: ”…For some time past I have not felt that at my age it would be right for me to incur such new and indefinite responsibilities I have therefore tendered my resignation to The Queen”. Churchill endorses Anthony Eden as his successor in upholding ”…the causes of Tory democracy which Lord Beaconsfield proclaimed, which Lord Randolph Churchill revived, and which I have tried to serve…[signed] Yours sincerely / Winston S. Churchill”. Two-page letter on two sheets has a hole punched to upper left and measures 7.5” x 9.5”. Lot includes retained copy of Harvey’s reply. Folds and scattered minor stains, else near fine. Sold for $12,500.

Joseph Stalin Autograph on a World War II Document
Joseph Stalin autograph on a World War II-dated document. Written in Cyrilic, ”Diploma of the Laureate of the Stalin Prize” is datelined from Moscow, and was awarded to the men who helped create emergency leather substitutes. Additionally signed by Y Chadaev, Council of the People’s Commissars, Administrator of Affairs. Reads in part: ”…by the decision of the Council of People’s Commissars of the Union at the S.S.R…the Stalin Prize second class is awarded to (Pisarenko, Alekseenko, Gavrikov, Rogov, Plotnikov, Khomutov, Marakhovskiy)…” Nicely bound document with embossed U.S.S.R. seal. Contained within a gilt hardcover folder with metallic profile busts of Stalin and Lenin. Document measures 10.25” x 14.25” and runs 8pp. Light toning to first blank page and minor foxing throughout, otherwise in very good condition. Dark Joseph Stalin autograph. Sold for $9,625.

Winston Churchill Signed Limited First Edition of “Marlborough: His Life and Times” — Rare Set Signed by Churchill, One of Only 155 in the Limited Edition, Here in the Original Bindings
Winston Churchill signed limited first edition of “Marlborough: His Life and Times”, a four volume biography of Churchill’s ancestor, John Churchill, 1st Duke of Marlborough, with extensive plates, illustrations and folding maps within. Churchill signs the limited edition page of Volume I, “Winston S. Churchill”, indicating this series as #39 in the limited edition of 155. London: George G. Harrap, 1933-38, with “First Published” on copyright pages. All four volumes are bound in their original orange morocco leather bindings, accented in gilt with five raised bands to spine, top edge gilt, and Churchill’s heraldic coat of arms in gilt to the front of each volume. Each volume measures 6.5″ x 9.75″. Darkening to spines, some light scuffing and foxing, joints starting in Volume I and the rear joint of Volume III. Overall a very good set, rare as signed in a very small limited edition run. Sold for $7,875.

Joseph Stalin document signed, dated 10 February 1922 when Stalin served as the People’s Commissar of Nationalities, dealing with all non-Russian residents in Soviet Russia. Signed ”J. Stalin” in red fountain pen, document appoints I.L. Dzevyaltovsky as Deputy Regional Plenipotentiary of the People’s Commissariat for Workers’ and Peasants’ Inspection (PCWPI) for Southeast Russia. With ink stamp of the People’s Commissariat at upper left. Single page measures 8.875” x 14”. Fading to typeset, uniform toning and a few pieces of archival tape at edges. Separation starting along folds and small holes at intersecting folds. Stalin’s signature remains clear and bold. Overall in very good condition. With University Archives COA. Sold for $7,188.

Joseph Stalin autograph letter signed as leader of the Soviet Union to his young daughter. Just before the Great Terror and his violent Great Purge policy, he writes to his nine year-old, Svetlana Alliluyeva. Dated 8 September 1935, in red grease pencil, it translates in part to: ”…I got your letter. Thank you for not forgetting about your Daddy. How are your secretaries doing? Please, find some time to write me about them. I’m doing fine, just missing you. I kiss you very much…Stalin”. After her mother’s apparent suicide and two marriages, Svetlana defected to the United States in 1967. Rare Joseph Stalin autograph. Single page letter measures 5.25” x 7.75”. Creasing, else near fine. Sold for $4,153.

Scarce 1941 Military Orders Signed by Joseph Stalin — Restructuring Railway Lines as the Nazis Were Advancing on Moscow
Extremely rare WWII-dated military order signed by Soviet dictator Joseph Stalin, as Stalin struggled to disrupt the Nazi advance into the country and protect Moscow. Entitled, “Order of the People’s Commissar of Defense of the USSR, document is dated 22 September 1941 and orders the restructuring of rail lines along the Trans-Siberian Railway. The order translates from Russian, “The transport fleet of the special corps of the armed railway forces is to be fazed out from the inventory of the special corps by the 30th of September and to be transformed into the Central Railroad Park No. 3 with the relocation of the base to the city of Ulan-Ude. Staff No 13/614 is hereby abolished. / PEOPLE’S COMMISAR OF DEFENSE OF THE USSR / [signed] J. Stalin / [signed] Agree / L. Kaganovich.” Signed in green grease pencil by Stalin. The document’s verso lists only 18 people who were to receive the order. Double-sided 8.5″ x 11.5″ sheet has very light toning and a small chip to lower left side. Near fine condition. Bold Joseph Stalin autograph. Sold for $4,078.

Franklin Delano Roosevelt signed copy of “The Public Papers and Address of Franklin D. Roosevelt.” New York: Random House: 1938. First edition. Five volume rare book set. A 500 copy limited edition. First volume presentation copy inscribed in dark ink on front free endpaper: “For Julian Orleans from Franklin D. Roosevelt.” Photographic portrait of President Roosevelt in each volume. Contents include campaign speeches, radio addresses and State of the Union speeches. Each book, measuring 6.5″ x 9.75″, averages 600-650pp. Bound in blue-grey calf boards with covers and spines stamped in gilt, housed in slipcase box. Interiors bright. Portion of White House envelope taped to front free endpaper underneath FDR’s signature. Slipcover has water stains, wear and tears to corners and edges, otherwise near mint condition. An excellent collection covering the most articulate, inspiring and quote-worthy moments delivered by the 32nd United States President. Sold for $4,000.

Quote on an impressive large sheet reads in full, “The furtherance of the great cause of peace among nations rests upon the [illegible], and with it a greater responsibility of national leaders to the will of the people whose servants they are – / Franklin D. Roosevelt / Governor of The State of New York”. Two embossed seals are present on the upper right and lower left corners. Single-page document measures 11.25″ x 16.5″. Pencil notations to verso and an erased numerical notation to upper right corner, else near fine. Sold for $3,896.

Franklin D. Roosevelt D-Day Prayer Broadside — One of a Select Few Given to Roosevelt’s Staff at Christmas in 1944
Beautiful presentation broadside of the “D-Day Prayer”, one of the few copies gifted by President Franklin D. Roosevelt to his staff at Christmas 1944. This particular copy was given to one of his Secret Service agents (and then by descent to consignor), and comes with a 1944 Christmas card from the Roosevelts. Lithograph features gilt and colored embellishments, transcribing the famous prayer that President Roosevelt delivered to the nation via radio on 6 June 1944 after the successful D-Day invasion, reading in part, “Last night, when I spoke with you about the fall of Rome, I knew at that moment that troops of the United States and our Allies were crossing the Channel in another and greater operation. It has come to pass with success thus far. / And so, in this poignant hour, I ask you to join with me in prayer…Success may not come with rushing speed, but we shall return again and again; and we know that by Thy grace, and by the righteousness of our cause, our sons will triumph…Christmas-1944-from / F.D.R.” Lithograph measures 14.75″ x 21.75″, framed with the Roosevelt Christmas card, and a ribbon at bottom right, to a size of 15.5″ x 21.75″. Not examined out of frame, but appears in very good to near fine condition with only light toning. Sold for $3,800.

Winston Churchill typed letter signed, dated 11 May 1943, to Cyril Gordon Illingworth, captain of the Queen Mary, thanking him for ”the efficient conduct of our journey”. The English Prime Minister traveled by sea to the U.S. to join FDR in war planning at the Third Washington Conference (code named TRIDENT), held in Washington, D.C. from 12 May to 27 May 1943. The Italian Campaign, air attacks on Nazi Germany and the Pacific War were on the meeting agenda. Churchill was accompanied by Averell Harriman, FDR’s special envoy to Europe. Lot includes a telegram from Harriman to Illingworth. A third telegram is from Hastings Ismay, Churchill’s chief military assistant and staff officer, to Illingworth. Churchill letter, measuring 7.5” x 9.5”, on 10 Downing Street letterhead, is signed, ”Winston S. Churchill”. The Harriman telegram, measuring 8” x 10”, on U.S. Embassy letterhead, is signed, ”W.A. Harriman”. The Ismay telegram, measuring 7” x 8.75”, on blindstamped Office of the War Cabinet letterhead, is signed, ”Hastings Ismay”. Tape residue, else very good plus condition. Sold for $3,691.

Winston Churchill Signed Copy of His Classic Work, “A History of the English Speaking Peoples” — First Editions in Original Dust Jackets
Winston Churchill signed first editions of “A History of the English-Speaking Peoples”. London: Cassell and Company Ltd., 1956-58. Churchill signs the bookplate on the half-title page of Volume I, “Winston S. Churchill”. Though begun during his “Wilderness Years” of the early 1930s, Churchill completed these volumes after World War II, giving attention to the “special relationship” of the United Kingdom and United States. He writes, “For the second time in the present century the British Empire and the United States have stood together facing the perils of war on the largest scale known among men, and since the cannons ceased to fire and the bombs to burst we have become more conscious of our common duty to the human race.” All four first editions are housed in their original price-clipped dust jackets, all in very good condition or better. Top edges red on all, in original red boards, each measuring 6.5″ x 9.75″ and housed in a 5.5″ x 10″ slipcase. Volume I is near fine, in a very good to near fine dust jacket. Vols. II-IV have been re-backed, preserving original endpapers, with some foxing to interior and dust jackets, and also light staining to the front board of Vol. III. In very good condition, with very good dust jackets, which have some foxing and sunning to spines. Overall a very attractive, well-preserved set, rare as signed. Sold for $3,438.
