Christoph Martin Wieland (German: [ˈviːlant]; 5 September 1733 – 20 January 1813) was a German poet and writer. He is best-remembered for having written the first Bildungsroman (Geschichte des Agathon), as well as the epic Oberon, which formed the basis for Carl Maria von Weber’s opera of the same name. His thought was representative of the cosmopolitanism of the German Enlightenment, exemplified in his remark: “Only a true cosmopolitan can be a good citizen.”

Lovely first edition set of Mark Twain’s ”Adventures of Tom Sawyer” and ”Adventures of Huckleberry Finn”, bound in publisher’s rarer and generally more desirable blue cloth with gilt accenting. ”Tom Sawyer” is a first edition, second printing (Hartford: American Publishing, 1876) while ”Huckleberry Finn” is a first edition, first printing (New York: Charles L. Webster, 1885). ”Tom Sawyer” printing points include half-title and frontis on same leaf, and no type damage on ”furniture to” on last line of page 17, found in the 3rd and later printings. One of only 748 copies with all edges gilt. All first printing points for ”Huckleberry Finn” are present including the most important table cloth visible underneath the bust of Twain with ”Heliotype Printing Co.” imprint. Both books measure 7” x 8.75”. Light rubbing and shelf wear to both and some internal foxing. ”Tom Sawyer” is in very good condition with the front hinge starting. ”Huckleberry Finn” is in very good plus condition. Internally, both are clean and free of any writing. A very attractive set with the blue cloth still bold and vibrant. Sold for $8,750.
Louisa May Alcott signed ”Little Women,” published by Roberts Brothers: Boston 1880. Impossible to find, the author’s signature within her masterpiece reads: ”L.M. Alcott” upon the fly-leaf. An Alcott signed instance of ”Little Women” has not been sold at auction in over 4 decades. First published in 1869, Alcott’s spellbinding novel about four sisters coming of age in the Civil War era has since become a classic. This edition is bound in hunter green cloth boards with gilt and black lettering and design. All edges gilt. Measures 7” x 8.5”. Surface loss to exterior corners and edges. Cracking to interior front hinge, with detached front free endpaper. A bookplate affixed to the front pastedown indicates this volume was gifted to the Brookline Public Library in 1917. In addition, the library’s perforated label appears at the bottom of the title page. A news clipping of Alcott’s obituary has been affixed to integral blanks. A label affixed to the rear pastedown reads: ”This book is for use in the library building only” and a barcode label has been partially removed from the rear free endpaper, else very good. Margaret Mitchell Signed First Edition, First Printing of ”Gone With The Wind”
Margaret Mitchell signed first edition, first printing of her Pulitzer prize-winning novel ”Gone With the Wind”, which inspired the Academy award-winning film of the same name. Elegantly signed ”Margaret Mitchell” on the front free endpaper in black ink. New York: The MacMillan Co., 1936, with the incorrect publishing date of ”May, 1936” on the copyright page identifying the first printing. Bound in ”Confederate grey” cloth boards, book measures 6” x 8.75”. Minor toning and foxing, separation starting along rear joint, and some damage to backstrip with piece torn (though still present) and staining. Overall very good condition. Sold for $6,050.
Frankenstein Mary Shelley Autograph Letter Signed
Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley autograph letter signed, dated 10 July (1843) from Sorrento, Italy. In this rare missive by the “Frankenstein” author, Shelley writes to the Italian nobleman Bartolomeo Cini regarding letters written by her late husband Percy Shelley to Cini’s mother-in-law, the writer Margaret King, which Shelley hoped to acquire. Sold for $4,950.

Sigmund Freud Signed Autobiography — Rare First ”Offprint” Edition
Sigmund Freud signed first offprint edition of his autobiography, inscribed to fellow psychoanalyst Oskar Pfister. Marked ”Nicht im Handel” (”not for sale”) and ”Sonderdruck” (”offprint”), this work was originally published in Volume IV of ”Die Medizin der Gegenwart in Selbstdarstellungen” (loosely translated to ”Contemporary Medicine Through Autobiographies”), and here constitutes its first separate issue. The series as originally published was designed to show the current state of medicine, as elucidated by the autobiographies of its leading practitioners. In green wrappers, published in Leipzig: Felix Meiner, 1925, in German. Signed and inscribed by Freud on the front wrapper to Pfister, and dated 1925. Pfister pens a gift inscription to the verso page of a photo frontispiece portrait of Freud, and also notates the last page in pencil. Freud and Pfister (a Swiss Protestant Minister) kept up a correspondence from 1909-1939 which was published in both English and German in 1963. Measures 6.25” x 9”. A near fine copy, beautifully housed in a custom clamshell box. Sold for $4,160.

Poet Walt Whitman signed photograph of himself from the late 19th century, with a distinctive, large signature by Whitman below his image in bright blue. Photo by ”F. GuteKunst Philadelphia” measures 6.25” x 8.5”, with image itself measuring 3.75” x 5.75”. Some foxing and dampstaining to lower edge, able to be framed out. Overall in good to very good condition.
