Chester Alan Arthur (October 5, 1829 – November 18, 1886) was an American attorney and politician who served as the 21st president of the United States from 1881 to 1885. Previously the 20th vice president, he succeeded to the presidency upon the death of President James A. Garfield in September 1881, two months after Garfield was shot by an assassin.

Chester A. Arthur Internal Revenue Document Signed During the First Year of His Presidency in 1881

Chester A. Arthur document signed as President. The 21st President’s signature appears ”Chester A. Arthur” in large script near the bottom edge. Partially-printed document dated 28 October 1881 appoints a Howard M. Kutchin to the position of Collector of Internal Revenue for the Third District in Wisconsin. Countersigned by H.F. French as Acting Secretary of the Treasury, single-page document measures 21” x 16”. Block of toning and scattered tears to edges, with chipping to the lower left side and Kutchin’s name inscribed to verso. Overall good to very good. Sold for $1,220.

Chester A. Arthur Autograph Letter Signed as Vice President

Chester A. Arthur autograph letter signed ”C. A. Arthur” as Vice President. Dated 10 November 1880, just a week after the election of Garfield and Arthur, letter reads, ”My dear Roessle, Thank you for your kind congratulations – I expect to be in Washington frequently during the winter & to be at the Arlington as usual. Yours faithfully CA Arthur”. Single-page letter on a single sheet of mourning stationery measures 4.75” x 5.75”. Creasing and two rolled bits of tape to verso, else near fine. Sold for $1,110.

Chester Arthur Autograph Document Signed During the Civil War — ”…The quarters…are particularly well adapted for the drill and practice of sharp shooters…”

Chester A. Arthur autograph document signed as Quartermaster General during the Civil War. Dated 30 October 1862, document reads in full: ”The quarters desired by Major Rowland being beyond the limits of this state, his application therein within made is respectfully referred to the Commander-in-Chief. The quarters are the same occupied by Col. Berdan and are particularly well adapted for the drill and practice of sharp shooters. I think no harm can result from allowing Major Rowland to quarter his recruits there and recommend that his request be granted / C.A. Arthur / QM Genl”. Note on folded blue paper measures 3.5” x 7.75”. Small tear at top, otherwise near fine with very strong ink writing. Sold for $1,110.

Chester Arthur Document Signed as President — Very Bold Signature

Chester A. Arthur document signed as President. Dated 17 September 1883, document appoints Louis A. Barnes as Register of the land office in Gainesville, Florida. With very strong ”Chester A. Arthur” signature in black ink at bottom. Measures 18” x 14”, matted to a size of 20” x 16”. Light foxing and toning, otherwise in near fine condition. Sold for $1,078.

Chester Arthur Document Signed as President in 1883 — Railroad Appointment

Railroad document signed by Chester Arthur as President on 2 April 1883. Arthur appoints an ”Albert Ordway of Washington, D.C.” as a ”Commissioner to examine and report upon fifty miles of railroad constructed by the Northern Pacific Railroad Company and the Yellowstone and Rocky Mountain Division of said Company’s line in Montana Territory”. Document is countersigned by Secretary of the Interior, H.M. Teller. Signed ”Chester A. Arthur” at right, document also includes Department of Interior raised seal at left. Measures 19” x 15”. Folds, toning and small spot on verso, overall very good plus condition, with a bold signature by Arthur. Sold for $999.

Chester A. Arthur Letter Signed as President — 1881

Letter signed ”Chester A. Arthur” as President. Dated 12 December 1881, letter is from the first few months of Arthur’s presidency after his succession following the assassination of Garfield. Letter is addressed to a James E. Morrison, Esq. in New York City. Likely written in a secretarial hand, letter reads in full, ”I thank you cordially for your letter of the 10th instant…” Accompanied by the original mailing envelope, which is not free franked and has had its stamp removed. Single-page letter on stationery embossed ”Washington” measures 4.5” x 7.75”. Mounted with tape at its edges to a mat below an engraving of Arthur to an overall size of 6.75” x 15.75”. Light toning and folds, otherwise near fine. Sold for $938.
