We at Nate D. Sanders Auctions recently sold a signed book from artist Chesley Bonstell, who helped popularize space travel and widely influenced science fiction art. Please see details below:

Chesley Bonestell Signed “The Conquest of Space” — The “Father of Modern Space Art”, Bonestell’s Eerily Prescient Artwork Fills this Classic 1949 Book

Chesley Bonestell signed first edition of “The Conquest of Space”, filled with artwork of what he envisioned space to look like. New York: Viking Press, 1949 first edition, third printing. Signed on the half-title page, “To Jane and Steve / from Chesley Bonestell / with best wishes”. Bonestell’s beautiful illustrations of space, moons, rockets and distant planets are prescient of what later photographs would reveal, giving him the name, “Father of Modern Space Art”. With accompanying text by Willy Ley. Book runs 160pp. and measures 8.25″ x 11″. Housed in original dust jacket which has some chipping and small paper loss on rear cover. Light shelf wear to book, overall in very good to near fine condition. Sold for $1,295.

“Steeds of Apollo” Oil on Canvas by Apollo XIII Mission Insignia Designer Lumen Martin Winter — Scarce Painting From 1981 Is Only “Steeds of Apollo” Original Artwork Apart From 1969 Mural

Stunning oil on canvas of “Steeds of Apollo” by Lumen Martin Winter, the Apollo XIII mission insignia designer whose artwork here of the galloping horses, racing towards the skies, is the only such depiction in painting apart from the original 1969 mural. This painting, signed and dated 1981 by Lumen Winter at lower right, was used for the limited edition lithographs signed by the Apollo XIII astronauts in 1981. Artwork remains in near fine condition, beautifully showcasing the galloping horses against a background of teal sky, opening to reveal the heavens. Sold for $25,200.

Robert Watson Painting Entitled ”The Martian Chronicles” — Used for the Cover Art of the 1953 Second Edition — Painting Owned by Ray Bradbury

Robert Watson painting entitled ”The Martian Chronicles”, as the artist provided this cover art for the book’s second edition, printed in 1953. Signed ”R. Watson” in paint at lower left, oil on canvas painting depicts a solitary human being, surrounded by decaying structural columns on a desolate landscape; this piece exactly matches the cover of the 1953 edition, with the exception that the book has a red background. With the artist’s name, painting title and ”Collection of Ray Bradbury” handwritten to verso. Painting measures 14” x 18”. Minor scratch to front, else near fine. With a COA from the estate of Ray Bradbury. Sold for $22,986.

Ray Bradbury Personally Owned Oil Painting by Robert Watson

Ray Bradbury’s own Robert Watson painting, signed ”R. Watson ’59” at lower left. Watson had earlier been commissioned to design the cover art for the second edition of Bradbury’s ”The Martian Chronicles”, printed in 1953. This oil on Masonite painting depicts a solitary figure between two thick, stone walls, against a beautiful, but desolate blue sky background. Painting is housed in a thin wooden frame to an overall size of 17.25” x 21.5”. Minor chipping to frame’s corners, else near fine condition. With a COA from the Ray Bradbury estate. Sold for $8,043.

Ray Bradbury Personally Owned Joseph Mugnaini Original Drawing Titled “The Halloween Kite”

Ray Bradbury personally owned ink drawing by artist Joseph Mugnaini, circa 1970’s. Titled “The Halloween Kite”, unsigned drawing depicts a large kite, which almost looks to be alive, against a night moon. Black and white ink shows Mugnaini’s technique of hatching strokes and stippling. Measures 11.5″ x 13″, in near fine condition. With a COA from the Ray Bradbury estate. Sold for $3,176.

Large Lot of Original Artwork and Lithographs by Robert Watson — Also Includes Over 1,700 ”The Martian Chronicles” Lithographs, Many Part of the Limited Edition Signed by Both Watson & Ray Bradbury

Large lot of original and lithographic artwork by the artist Robert Watson, well known for providing the cover art to the 1953 second edition of ”The Martian Chronicles” by Ray Bradbury. Complete collection, consigned by the Watson estate, includes:

1. Over 1,700 lithographs of ”The Martian Chronicles” artwork (Studio Graphics, 1995), each measuring 22” x 30”. This includes 240 lithographs signed by both Ray Bradbury and Robert Watson, numbered as part of the limited edition of 3,000; 108 signed by Bradbury alone, unnumbered; 147 signed by Watson alone, numbered as part of the limited edition; 447 unsigned and numbered as part of the limited edition; and 759 unsigned, unnumbered. Minor edgewear to most, overall in very good plus condition.

2. Large oil on board measuring 24” x 18”, titled ”Road to Jericho”. Painting shows an individual gazing upon a large archway before him. Signed ”R Watson 93” at lower right. Some scuffing along edge from framing, and mark at base of archway. Overall very good condition.

3. Large oil on board measuring 24” x 18” titled on verso ”Road to Jericho Revisited”, similar in style to ”Road to Jericho”. Signed ”R. Watson 96” at lower right. Minor soiling, overall very good condition.

4. Oil on canvas by Robert Watson, measuring 22” x 18” in shades of rust-orange. Unsigned. Minor denting and scuffing, in very good condition.

5. Oil on board, signed ”R. Watson” at both lower left and lower right, showing a solitary gondolier along with individuals pointing to a red moon or planet. Artwork measures 15” x 17”, framed to 19.25” x 21.5”. Some grime adhered to surface, and cracks at top edge. Very good condition. Painting was presented as a gift to Watson’s son.

6. Oil on board, signed ”R. Watson 77” at lower right, titled ”Two Figures”. Measures 10” x 8”. Minor soiling, and discoloration to edges from framing. Very good condition.

7. Oil on board, signed ”R Watson 99” at lower left, showing two individuals on a beach with a large angelic statue hovering above them. Measures 10” x 8”. Minor soiling, in very good plus condition.

8. Oil on board, signed ”R. Watson 02” at lower right, showing two figures on the beach, watching a sailboat in the distance. Measures 10” x 8”. Very good to near fine condition.

9. Oil on wood, signed ”R. Watson 71” at lower right, showing a solitary figure against a blue ocean-sky background. Measures 8” x 3”. Very good plus condition.

10. Artist Proof silkscreen signed and inscribed in pencil along lower edge, ”A/P For Melinda & Tony With Love – Dad Robert Watson 50”. Large print measures 16” x 20”; moderate soiling, overall in good plus condition. Accompanied by a smaller limited edition lithograph of the same artwork, entitled ”Prophet”, signed ”R. Watson” and numbered 8/50, measuring approximately 5.5” x 7”; near fine condition.

11. Untitled Artist Proof screenprint of artwork completed in 1951, signed in pencil at lower right ”R. Watson A/P 2 of 2”. Measures 12” x 14”. Mounted to mat board, with moderate soiling and dampstaining; good condition.

12. Limited edition Artist Proof lithograph titled ”Archway” from artwork completed in 1987. Signed ”R. Watson” and numbered ”48/50 Artist Proof” in pencil along lower margin. Measures 28” x 23”, affixed to mat on margins. Minor buckling and abrasion to verso, else near fine.

13. Two lithographs of ”Venetian Backwater Revival” from 1997, each measuring 28.5” x 22.5”. Light edgewear, very good condition.

14. Limited edition lithograph titled ”Crusaders Tower”, signed ”R. Watson” and numbered ”50/400” in pencil along lower margin. Watson has additionally sketched a rendering of the artwork along bottom margin, initialed and dated 1993. Lithograph measures approximately 26” x 21”, framed to 30” x 25”. Not examined out of frame, but appears near fine.

15. Artist Proof lithograph titled ”Evening Light” from 1981, signed ”R. Watson” in gold pen at lower right, and numbered ”AP/5” at lower left. Measures 30.5” x 22”. Some edgewear, else near fine.

16. Four Artist Proof lithographs titled ”Reflect” from 1980, signed ”R. Watson” in gold pen at lower right, and numbered ”AP/1”, ”AP/2”, ”AP/4” and ”AP/5” at lower left, respectively. Each measures 27.5” x 22”. Some edgewear, and scuff at top to one, else near fine.

17. Large Artist Proof lithograph, untitled, signed ”R. Watson” in gold pen at lower right, and numbered ”AP/1” at lower left. Measures 28” x 42”. Mounted to board with wood mounting on back for hanging. Significant edgewear, and minor scuffing. Very good condition.

18. Large lithograph, untitled, measuring 35.5” x 28.5”. Creasing and soiling, mostly confined to border. Good condition.

19. San Francisco Proclamation, signed by Mayor Willie Brown, Jr., designating 17 May 1997 as ”Robert Watson Day”. Framed to a size of 12.25” x 16.5”. Nick to frame, else near fine. Sold for $3,125.

”Ten Views of the Moon” Full Set of 10 Lithographs — A Collaboration Between Joseph Mugnaini & Ray Bradbury — Personally Owned by Bradbury — ”20/150”

Ray Bradbury personally owned full set of ”Ten Views of the Moon”, an 1981 artistic collaboration between Joseph Mugnaini and Ray Bradbury. The artist began collaborating with Bradbury in 1952, composing the covers and interior art for several first editions of Bradbury’s works. Lithographs are housed in a card-style cover with a depiction of Mugnaini’s ”The Praying Mantis Vehicle” from ”The Martian Chronicles”. Cover reads, ”The View of the Moon / Joseph Mugnaini / In collaboration with / Ray Bradbury / With an Introduction by / Norman Corwin / Lynton Kistler / Los Angeles 1981”. Interior has introductions by Bradbury and Corwin. Lithographs are each numbered ”20/150” and are signed ”R. Bradbury” and ”Joseph Mugnaini”, and titled by one of the two, all in pencil: (1) ”The April Witch”, (2) ”Robots: The Hunters and the Hunted”, (3) ”The Halloween Kite”, (4) ”The Visitor”, (5) ”Martian Tower”, (6) ”The Hound”, (7) ”The Green Morning”, (8) ”Leviathan 99”, (9) ”Martian Town” and (10) ”The Dragon”. Each measures 26” x 20” and cover measures 20.25” x 26”. Fine condition. With a COA from the Ray Bradbury estate. Sold for $1,664.

Neil Armstrong Signed Artwork of Armstrong Standing on the Lunar Surface — Signed ”Neil Armstrong / Apollo 11”, in Near Fine Condition

Neil Armstrong signed artwork, a brilliant luminescent foil etching of John Berkey’s painting ”A Giant Leap”. Artwork of Armstrong standing on the moon measures 7.5” x 11.5”, affixed to custom mat boldly signed by Armstrong in black felt tip, ”Neil Armstrong / Apollo 11”. Entire piece measures 12” x 16”, with accompanying card describing the artwork. Signature was obtained at the North Carolina State Fair in 1972, which featured a space exhibit, and is one of only 75 signed copies released by the State Fair’s Publicity Office. Very well preserved, in near fine condition. Sold for $1,375.

Ray Bradbury Personally Owned Art From ”The Martian Chronicles” Signed by the Artist & by Bradbury — Plus an Identical Unsigned Piece

Art from ”The Martian Chronicles” signed by the artist and by Ray Bradbury from his personal collection. Art is a trio of pieces matted with a slip signed, ”Ray Bradbury” and ”Edward Miller”. Slip bears a limitation number field ”[blank] / 200”. Also matted is a quote placed along the top edge at center, ”The Martians stared back up at them from the rippling water…” Accompanied by an identical framed piece with unsigned slip. Each measures 21.25” x 11”. Scratch to top edge of frame on signed piece. Near fine overall. With a COA from the Ray Bradbury estate. Sold for $1,221.
