Who Was Charles Addams?
Charles Addams is perhaps best known for creating The Addams Family, which first appeared as cartoons in the New Yorker and later was adapted into a TV series and several films. Addams’s art style is distinctly gothic and dark, but rather than being scary comes across as whimsical and features cheerful characters. He contributed to The New Yorker for over 50 years, and released several cartoon collections of his work.

Original Painting & Cover of Bradbury’s From the Dust Returned — Sold for $25,000
We sold an original Charles Addams painting from 1946 for $25,000. Painting embodies Addams’ signature whimsical and macabre fashion and depicts a Gothic mansion overlooking a short surrounded by spirits making their way towards the house. Painting was owned by Ray Bradbury and was used as the cover of his 2001 book “From the Dust Returned”. Accompanied with COA from the Ray Bradbury estate.

Art Published in “The New Yorker” — Sold for $24,361
We realized $24,361 for an original Charles Addams illustration depicting a Boy Scout tying a hangman’s noose during a rope typing lesson with several Boy Scouts. Ink and grisaille artwork measures 15.125 x 11.125 inches and was published in The New Yorker.

Original “New Yorker” Cartoon Illustration Art — Sold for $4,000
Charles Addams was a regular contributor to The New Yorker from 1932 onward. We sold an original illustration published in the August 1952 issue for $4,000. Artwork features a golfer leaving a fortune teller’s house and being told, “You’re going to shoot 127” as she prophesies with her crystal ball. Ink and watercolor illustration is signed by Addams in the lower right and measures 13.5 x 13.5 inches.

Wednesday Addams Drawing in Homebodies Book
Homebodies is Charles Addams’s book of dark and gothic illustrations first released in 1954. Some of the featured illustrations later gave rise to his iconic book The Addams Family. We sold a first printing of Homebodies with a Charles Adams autograph and hand drawing of Wednesday Addams on the front free endpaper.
