Challenger STS-51L Robbins Medal

The tragic STS-51L mission of the Challenger contained seven crew members, commanded by Dick Scobee. Before Scobee’s NASA career he was part of the U.S. Air Force and served as a combat aviator in the Vietnam War. We’ve sold these Robbins medallions from the tragic STS-51-L mission:

Challenger STS-51-L Robbins Medal, Serial #1 — Given to the Family of Commander Dick Scobee

Challenger STS-51-L Robbins medal, with serial number 1, given to the parents of Commander Dick Scobee to commemorate the tragic mission. All STS-51-L Robbins medal were struck after the mission, as the flown medals were lost in the explosion. Sterling silver Robbins medal is marked with serial number 1 on the rim, along with the sterling mark. Each side of medal shows the astronauts’ surnames, with the reverse additionally reading ”January 28, 1986”, the date of the mission. Medal measures 1.75” in diameter at its widest point, with loop at top for hanging as a pendant. Housed in its original Robbins medal case, though cracked. Near fine condition. With an LOA from Scobee’s brother. Sold for $1,875.

Lot of 8 Robbins Medals from the Collection of NASA Astronaut Rhea Seddon — Including Two from STS-51-L Challenger

Lot of 8 unflown Robbins medals from the personal collection of Space Shuttle astronaut Rhea Seddon, all housed in original NASA cases. Collection includes:

1) Robbins medal #33 from STS-40 Space Shuttle Columbia, where Seddon served as Mission Specialist 3. Launched 5 June 1991. Near fine condition.

2) Robbins medal #39 from STS-60 Space Shuttle Discovery and the first mission of the Shuttle-Mir Program. Launched 3 February 1994. Near fine condition.

3) Robbins medal #59 from STS-73 Space Shuttle Columbia, launched 20 October 1995. Near fine condition.

4) Robbins medal #77 from STS-37 Space Shuttle Atlantis, launched 5 April 1991. Near fine condition.

5) Robbins medal #100 from STS-51-B Space Shuttle Challenger, launched 29 April 1985. Near fine condition.

6) Robbins medal #149 from STS-51-L Space Shuttle Challenger, which launched 28 January 1986 and failed shortly after take-off. Near fine condition.

7) Second Robbins medal #150 from STS-51-L Space Shuttle Challenger. Near fine condition.

8) Robbins medal #163 from STS-51-D Space Shuttle Discovery where Seddon served as Mission Specialist 1. Launched 12 April 1985. Near fine condition. Sold for $3,781.
